What About "Rail Dial" Watches?
What are "Rail Dial" watches? And they are surely more rare or non-existant on certain models.
I own an Explorer II 1655 "Rail Dial" Watch. Prof. Rolex (Watch Talk Forums) describes them as watches that have the c's from the superlative chronometer and officially certified on the dial directly over each other, leaving a vertical gap. Mine also has a pointed rolex crown. On the 1655's, it is thought to have been made in just 1978, perhaps also in 1979. Thus a rare version of a rare watch. Looking at many dozens of pics, I have seen only two: mine and Prof. Rolex's http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=60010 But inquiring (trying to sell), it appears that the value of the watch is no more than a regular watch. Any ideas why? Would not a rare version of a rare watch be worth more? My watch is currently at a top watchmakers waiting to be refurbished. Chris Atlanta |

For starters, this is probably the worst time in the last 10 years to sell a watch. Great time for a buyer though!

Value isn't always driven by how rare one variation is to another.. The rail dials are an interesting variation...and many collectors seek them out...
But overall condition is the main driver rather than slight dial variations..with exceptions of course....reds, Newmans, etc.

Hi Chris,
Great reference In answer to your question. Yes the Rail Dial on the 1655 is quite rare and yes the reason is the C's line up, but it is only that, a very slight difference from another dial maker for Rolex. The crown/coronet on your watch is known as the Frog Foot and is not particularly rare, but coupled with the rail it is more unusual. Dealers try to make a big issue of slight differences to get more money for a watch, but in this economic climate a 1655 is a 1655 condition and box and papers etc... are King. 1655's aren't rare though, they are just sought after and supply is less than demand most of the time, they are not hard to find though if you are prepared to part with the cash. It is still one of my favourite Rolex watches and I love the dial while many find it too cluttered. My watch is a non Rail 1655 from 1979 with the same coronet as your exhibits. |
