A. Lange & Sohne Watch Loupe Question
Does anyone know what function this part serves on the Lange watch loupe?

Presumably, it’s for viewing using both eyes, with the bridge of the nose resting against that part.

It appears to be solely for display since that’s removable and only on the objective end of the loupe.

Just for reference, when I use these I place my eye and the flanged wooden part of the loupe, by squinting, the eye muscles are able to contract around the flared part of the wooden loupe and thereby hold the watch loupe in place, much like any monoacle. The metal part faces towards the watch. I think that is the correct way to use it. So, I don't see anyway that one could use the loupe for double viewing per se.
My guesses for the attachment piece include: 1) a spacing device that allows one to rest the metal of the attachment on the object being viewed which is may be the correct focal length. However, this might seem to scratch the object being viewed so I am not sure that is a great idea. Also, it would seem that the attachment piece might also tend to block the light. 2) somewhat related to the latter part of the first idea is the attachment piece may serve to block light/glare or reflection when viewing the watch parts thru its front or rear crystal. 3) I like the suggestion of the attachment being another advertisement, after all, there really isn't any need to put the manufacturer's logo on it - it is already on the outside surface of the metal ring of the objective lens. Surely the owner knows what he/she has. Given the proximity of the two logos it would seem to be redundant and perhaps really intended for photo opportunities. I don't think the attached piece is critical for viewing or precludes the use of the watch loupe since there area lot of watch loupes that do not have this attachment and seem to work just fine. I have two other loupes and have no issues with them. |
