You cannot set them independently.
It is a characteristic of the earlier gmts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No problem. You set the time and move the bezel to track another Timezone. Later models were independently set allowing 3 Timezone tracking.
I have the same watch. It is a transitional model... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Only the GMT 2 (and Exp 2) lets you set the 24-hour hand independently of the hour hand.

I like the 16700 more than 16710 due to quick set date on 16700. Of course this is my personal preference.
Enjoy the watch and it is beauty Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The advantage of the 16700 is the quick set date which allows independent adjustment of the date. This is the way Rolex originally implemented the GMT watches. When the GMT II was introduced, the 24 hour hand became independent from the regular hour hand but the date was set by twirling the 24 hour hand. The GMT allowed tracking of two time zones. The current zone and the alternate zone by setting the bezel to the correct time for the alternate zone. GMT IIs allow tracking three time zones, the local one, an alternate by setting the GMT hand, and a third by setting the bezel to the time by aligning it with the GMT hand. For many that is overkill for other it allows travel while still tracking both home and perhaps Zulu time.
