Wifes date just does't run for long once off wrist

I got my wife a second hand datejust from a reputable jewellers last month. She has been wearing it and taking it off about 11 at night and the following morning it is stopping about 4am. 5 hours doesn't seem right at all.

I have contacted the jewellers who have said they will sort it but what is this likely to be as I don't want to keep a watch that is going to be faulty further down the line

Thanks

Simon

Have you manually wound the crown 40 full turns to make sure mainspring is wound up?

Three possibilities here. It either needs to be fully wound, your wife doesn't move her wrist enough, or the watch needs serviced. Any combination of these three is also possible.

My guess would be the watch needs serviced, which is common with many watches purchased second-hand. Automatic watches need maintenance after a while.

But, wind it up and see what happens.

Cannot overwind. Don't worry about that part. Just stop at 40.

My mom also had a DJ from the 1980's and it was losing time. I think it was a two-part factor of a limited power reserve of those older watches and she is very sedentary some days (age 75).

Thanks for that. It had just been serviced apparently or so all the papers say. I will wind it as long as I cannot damage it doing it if its already been done this week?

No damage from winding. Once you feel more resistance then you're at the limit. Anything past that will slip and protect from over-winding.

If it's recently been serviced then there's also the possibility that something wasn't done correctly or replaced as needed. A broken mainspring can also cause what you're experiencing.

Where was the watch serviced?

I’d wind up fully as stated above and leave it. Check the time and date to see how long it lasts to give yourself an idea of the full reserve and go from there

I bought it from Wongs in Liverpool a jewellers I like , I will have to look at papers to see where serviced. Will try the full wind up first and see if that makes a difference this week
