116655 Yachtmaster - To wear or to sell?

Good morning gentlemen (and ladies of TRF):

I recently picked up a 116655 Yachtmaster rose gold on oysterflex from a recently opened AD in the area. It was my way of showing that I was a serious collector and to get on the accelerated list for all of the steel sports in 2019. I only got around 10% discount on it (so yes I will probably lose a bit if and when I sell it brand new). I thought it would be a good "investment" since I don't have Batman, Hulk, Pepsi GMT or Daytona and would like to get these at retail.

Thankfully it is all stickered up and I had a chance to spend a week with it at home and trying it out.

The question is this - I have a pretty varied collection and the Yachtmaster is somewhat of a hybrid and seems to be perfect for a 1-2 watch collection? For me, if I want to go really sporty I have my SD 43, my SD 4000 and my Royal Oak Chrono. If I want to go dressy I have my Patek 3970. If I want to go in between, I have my Patek 5711 and AP 15202. If I want to go vintage I have my 1680 red submariner. I also recently got the rubber b strap for the ROC so I do have a rubber option.

As much as I like it, I would lose about $2000 if I remove the stickers and wear it. Should I keep or sell? I do like the red font which matches nicely with the 1680 red and the SD43.

I’m always happy to lose $1-2k by wearing a watch. I see selling something without really trying it out as a greater loss.

Seems like money is not a problem for you so why not wear it a little and sell it later if you don't like it.

I say try it out. It's a piece that really exceeded my expectations. Not too flashy for a RG watch, and it has a unique bezel in the Rolex lineup that really gives it some added depth.

I did move mine on eventually because I've come to the conclusion that coloured gold is not my thing, but nothing against the piece itself.

I took a small loss on mine, but it was a price well worth the experience for me.

Thankfully the oysterflex fits my wrist really well and I had a chance to wear it without any bracelet overhang or looseness, however yes I really don't get to experience the full amazingness of mirror polished rose gold on the clasp and perhaps the case.

Rolex did a good job with stickers - here’s it on my 6.75 inch wrist:

Is that ceramic bezel? The complaint on YM has always been that the platinum is a scratch magnet, perhaps this is much more resistant?

I was really attracted to the matte finish ceramic bezel, the red font, and the golden rolex font (gilded)- the fonts are really attractive and rare in the vintage world. I also liked the idea of rubber and appreciate how the grooves in the oysterflex really help hug the wrist in a cool way - kind of like a bra for a woman lol.

On my wrist I somehow like it but don't "love" - if you know what I mean. The SD 4000 I "love". I'm also afraid once I remove the stickers its going to scratch up like crazy hehe

If you don’t love it, then sell it with stickers on. Simple.

I wouldn't over complicate it. If you are going to wear it, keep it. Otherwise sell with stickers to minimize the hit and move on. Sounds like you are on the fence already, if that helps.

Nice collection BTW.

Just sell it... cash up and hope you get your steel models soon....

If for some reason you want to own this one ever again you will get it at even better discounts possible...

Since you're already considering selling it. It may as well be gone. It's just a matter of time before you move it on.

No use keeping something you don't absolutely love. Judging by the other watches you own. I don't think a few k is going to make any big difference. No point stressing over it.

its a really great watch and i loved mine. just let it go yesterday actually. It only left to make way for an OF Daytona, but had i not been doing that it would have stayed.

Its an underrated watch for sure, but its one of the best in the catalogue IMO

If you sell the Yachtmaster now and lose a few k today, BUT get a Batman, Hulk etc at retail vs gray market you'll have saved the cash. So, really you're not 'losing' by selling, especially if you're not really enamored by the piece anyway.

This watch is really growing on me...you might really like it after wearing it a few days. If not, at least you’ll know for sure

I cant afford this business plan.Spending just to get the chance to spend more does not work for me .The second spending is also not guaranteed,Maybe there are 20 others doing what you are doing at the new AD ??

You can wear the YM

I think the economics of this situation are that you’ll lose quite a bit more than $1k-2k if you sell it.

I’d say wear it, but that is just me. I would have never purchased it in the first place for the reason you say you purchased it for. Seems extremely silly

Why are you asking the question since you've already listed it in the FS section?

Also...the discussion of a watch in the FS section in this sub-forum is against Forum rules.

Struggling with the logic of buying a watch you don’t really want and then selling it for a loss just to be given the chance to buy something you do want....

especially if the AD says "we have your BLRO, but why don't you wear the YM down here when you come". Seriously i make a point to wear my watches into my AD.
They want to sell watches obviously, but they also know when they are getting played to get that watch and it might backfire.

I’d just say I left it at home along with all the other watches I bought that I didn’t actually want just so I can buy this one

I also dont wear a Panerai to a Rolex AD when I am interested in Rolex. Common sense

It really sounds like you were really never too excited about this model from the beginning. Now that you've worn it for a little bit, it sounds like you are still not in "love" with it? I think selling would be the way to go. I have a feeling that you're not gonna feel any different if you removed the stickers and started using it regularly. Plus, it sounds like you are having a bit of trouble fitting this into your collection as you already have a watch that fits every "need" already? Fantastic collection btw! Your Patek 3970....

Me neither, which is why I just tell the AD what I want and he gets it for me. It’s that simple, no games :)

+1

I always wear the watches they sell me when I go in. This builds trust and they are more likely to sell to you since you won’t be in the flipper column.

To the OP, I think the YM looks great on you and it’s a really nice piece. My advice is to keep it and enjoy wearing it, it might grow on you. If a few months pass and you still have mixed feelings, then sell it.

Exactly. New buyer calls AD after purchase just to check in on the original purchase. Will you still get your hot models then?
