OK. This time I'm really stopping. (Probably)

My 2019 aspirational watch is the Sky Dweller. I had come to rest on the SS back dial and was expecting to get on my AD’s list this year. This might be my last Rolex, possibly my last watch purchase, but one should never say never. I think that I am mentally topping off my collection with a Sky Dweller in order to justify buying one. The watch to end them all – kind of thing.

The Blusey I bought last year was my granddad piece. I like SS and WG, although I can only afford the former. TT has never done it for me, but the Blusey has been a huge visual and ownership success for me. On the one hand, this probably just proves that I’m in granddad land. Or it might suggest that my SS view of the world is too narrow and that new experiences beckon.

Whatever the reason, I’ve been coming off my desire for the SS/WG Sky Dweller, and thinking about going TT again, with the black dial. Today was my first opportunity to visit my AD this year (about something else). As soon as I walked in the apologies started. They have been notified by Rolex of their SS Sky Dweller allocation for 2019. They will receive one black, one white and two blue. My understanding is that it is their minimum allocation, so they may receive more. But given this fall back in SS Sky Dweller supply, I won’t be going onto the list.

What about TT? They can order one. The problem for me is committing without seeing one. Which turned out not to be not a problem. They had a TT Champagne delivered last Friday which was not yet on display. It was beautiful. The bezel is very reflective if it catches the light and for me at least, the gold dial was OTT. It wasn’t gaudy. It was just a bit too bright and shiny for me. Other than that, the size, fit, weight, layout and TT contrast/blend worked perfectly for me.

No discount. Which did not come as a surprise. It will be in this year. Could be next week, could be December. It’s personal and each to our own. I think the black sunburst dial with the gold bezel is going to look fantastic. When I showed my wife a picture of the gold dial watch I had tried on, she said I should have bought it. It does look fantastic in person. But I think I’ll be happier with black as a long-term proposition.

Other AD gossip. Hot on the heels of the discontinued WG BLRO, the BLNR is history. It will die at Baselworld in March. The AD buyer is expecting some tasty GMT introductions around the new movement, although with Rolex it’s impossible to be certain. No significant Sub changes expected this year. Although with Rolex, it’s impossible to be certain! He is also looking forward to seeing something special from Tudor. Again. I think we’ve probably guessed what that is likely to be. While I was chatting and admiring the watch, I overheard two incoming calls, both enquiring about Rolex. A Sub and a GMT, as far as I could tell. The responses were polite, professional and utterly predictable.

Sounds like your 2019 will be epic, nice

How long before some calls BS on your ‘AD gossip’? I’m not by the way, it would be great if all that happened. And they stocked properly.

Imagine, while all us in nevernever land are cursing Rolex for the shortages, the Rolex elf’s were actually beavering away on new models ready to flood the market.

Yeah...I'm still looking for the one watch to end them all.

But, I wish you luck with yours.

My feeling exactly. Rolex usually doesn't spotlight the same stainless steel sport model in successive years.

I won't hold my breath either way regarding the BLNR. It wouldn't surprise me if they discontinued it, but I am fairly certain no one has any clue. We know the blue/black bezel was the first bicolor ceramic bezel, but my impression was such that the only reason the bezel was blue and black was because it was the first set of colors they learned how to do properly. We a PR story about Pan Am and their colors and day/night, etc. I just think Rolex is getting better and better at doing bicolor ceramics and the BLNR might end up being a "transitional piece."

Are watches like cars where you need a new one every 7 years or so, or are they like women and 1 good one will do-ya?

Hehe. I’m just asking....

Thank you all.

How many GMTs do we need? That's tough. How about 365? Or maybe 52.

I will report when it arrives. I may be gone some time.....
