Buying Alternatives

Here's a question: Let's say you want to add a watch to your collection, but only want to spend $2,500 to $3,000. Let's also say you want to buy only new. Obviously Rolex is out. What other brand would you consider? IWC? Tag? I appreciate your opinions. Thanks!

Breitling, very good watches and strong too.
Tag also very good watch, still wear my first real watch -> tag heuer link chronometer very often.
You have a lot of brands out there, enjoy your search :)

IWC - Aquatimer, Pilot Chrono, etc. - very well made, and a tremendous value

I typically look for a need then a watch and/ or brand that fills that need. Many quality brands and references to meet your requirements.
Have fun with the search.

I like the IWC Aquatimer's. Not sure if you can get one that cheap though. Sounds like you can get a TAG and some Omgea models for your price range.

I think Breitling makes sense at this price point. IWC makes great watches, but I agree you'll have a hard time meeting that price point.

I just traded my Breitling for an IWC Mark XV on a bracelet. Let me tell you, I had always heard that IWC's bracelets were the most comfortable, however, after wearing it for two days, I can confirm it. This bracelet is the best thing ever. It is more comfortable than the bracelet on my Rolex and Omega. You should be able to find a Mark XV slightly used, but in 90%+ condition for the amount you want to spend. This watch rocks.

Wow, uncanny! I'm in the exact same position! Although, I've narrowed down my choices since I want a GMT with a silver or blue dial. If I can find a good watch with those specs at that price, I'm set.

So far, I'm looking at these watches:

1. Omega SMP GMT blue dial
2. Tudor Aeronaut, Iconaut
3. Breitling Colt GMT
4. Ebel 1911 BTR GMT
5. IWC Spitfire UTC
6. Omega Co-axial GMT
7. Tag Heuer Grand Carrera GMT
8. Tag Heuer Carrera Twin Time
9. Raymond Weil Nabucco GMT

Long list, but numbers 4, 5 and 6 and some others may be a tad over the budget. Definitely, there are a lot of good watches at that price range but among that list, the standouts are Omega, IWC and Breitling, in my opinion.

I was looking at the Tag Grand Carrera, but my concern with Tag's are that they change their styles way too often. I also heard that it is difficult or impossible to get parts after a few years. Good looking watch, but it is in every mall jeweler I pass by, and that makes it less attractive in my mind.

Besides the appearance, durability is important to me, since I hope to wear any watch I buy a lot, and I hate sending them in for repair. Which of the watches in your list are the most durable (not including the Tudor)?

Thanks for your input.

You can definitely get a pre-owned Aquatimer for under $3K.

Check out the pilot's watches from RGM Watches -- in your price point and great old world style craftsmanship; Several other people have also already mentioned Omega, Breitling, Sinn --- I'll throw Oris out there as well.

True. But since he stated in his OP "Let's also say you want to buy new only" I commented with that in mind.

I personally agree that a lightly used Rolex or other brand would be in my mix of options though.

I saw Omega Speed Masters at Cosco for $2999.00. If I ever get another Omega, it would be that one. IWC are really cool, too. Really finely made and tasteful watches.

Parts? Well, as for the internals, they all mostly use ETA movements so there are a ton of parts available for those. As for other parts, I think there shouldn't be a problem for the newer models (but you have to bring this up with your AD).

As for being in every jewelery store, well, I guess it depends where you are. In my case, Tag is no more present than Rolex is. So, I don't really consider that a factor. I mean, there are many brands that are very difficult to find. That doesn't necessarily make them better. Like Invicta, De Baufre, Hamilton, for example. Over here, very few retailers carry those brands.

Well, it really depends on how you use it. A well taken care of Tag will outlast a poorly used Patek or Vacheron any day.

When you say you "hate sending your watch in for repair" I take it your watch was damaged. If I may ask, what happened? Because if the nature of your usage is particularly rough, very few brands will probably hold up to the abuse anyway.

Another thing that can potentially damage a movement is when you don't follow the correct procedure for changing the date. Most people just go in there and change it regardless of the position of the hour/minute hands and this can potentially damage the mechanism.

That said, try not to follow brands too much. Instead, buy the watch that suits your needs best. If it so happens to be a Tissot, then get a Tissot. But, if you want to get something to spruce up your collection, then you're probably better off sticking to IWC, Omega, Breitling (IWC probably being the most prestigious).

You'll have plenty of cash leftover, but I like the Hamilton Jazzmaster in SS on a leather strap. It's just a nice, no-nonsense semi-dressy watch without a lot of brand stigma.

In that price range - I'd also consider Oris. Well made timepieces.
