Vintage date just
Saw this one today at the pawnshop. Bracelet is shot or just very stretched. The guy I normally talk to there was around so I couldn’t open it it remove the bracelet.
Steep price I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sigma dial, so the price is pretty good. Would you be buying it to flip for a profit, or do you like it to wear? It will clean up well, and you can get the bracelet restored.

I keep thinking of finding one to wear. I don’t wear much gold stuff except my wedding ring. The size is smaller than anything else I have by far but a classic is a classic for a reason I guess.

Well, after looking more closely, I have a couple of concerns. Did the seller indicate the reference of the watch, e.g. 1601? The dial appears to be flat, and I would have expected a recessed outer ring (a.k.a. pie-pan). I am accustomed to seeing sigma dials with four-digit references, in which case it should be a pie-pan dial. But obviously there are a lot of shadows in the photo so it's hard to see the details on the dial. Alternatively, maybe there are some uncommon 16013 DateJusts with sigma dials; I just haven't seen one. Also, I have a question about the date ring with very bold numbers and a "closed 6". Possibly the watch has some service parts. Hopefully more knowledgeable members will provide their feedback

I think the price is reasonable. Get a new crystal, have the movement serviced and replace those end links and you'll have nice piece for a total cost of perhaps $2,100 give a take a couple hundred. Still a good price. It will last you for years if not decades. My only caveat is the closed 6s and 9s on the date wheel. Probably not period correct if it's a 16013. But if it doesn't bother you go for it.

I may go take a look tomorrow and get the model number off of it.
If it indeed has the wrong date wheel how difficult is it to find the correct one, and does it really affect the value of this particular watch? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

OK, if it's indeed a 1601, let me show you what the dial should look like. Notice how this dial (taken from HQ Milton) has a pie-pan shape with a recessed outer ring. You can clearly see a ridge running around the dial at the outer edge of the applied markers, and the lume-dots are in the recessed annulus. If the reference is 1601, the dial should have this shape IMO. If it is flat, the dial may not be correct. In your photo, it's hard to see the ridge, but you will be able to tell in person.

It's a 1601 with a US made oval link bracelet. That's a good price for it, barely more than the movement would bring. It's got some miles on it but could be a candidate to restore or enjoy like it is.
Never turn down a good watch over consumables like the date wheel, it probably got replaced at a service over the last 50 years or so, don't sweat it. You should factor in a service, that crystal is the original style with rounded edges which gives heavy distortion looking a the dial. Check the gasket channel for corrosion and if it's reasonably clean that looks like a good deal. :) |

The new photo appears to show the correct pie-pan dial, and it's a sigma dial as a bonus. I agree that the price is very good for what you're getting. Just a question of personal taste as to whether you like it and will wear it. The good news is that if you find you don't like it, you certainly won't lose any money on re-sale.

My apologies, I was really providing that explanation and photo for the OP, but I realize that was not clear in my response. And the new photo does make it clear that the dial is a pie-pan.

Our local Rolex business is booked up for a couple months. I know Omega watch repair/service but not Rolex. Suggestions?

Don't get it serviced until you're 100% sure you're going to keep it.

I think it's attractive and looks good on you. If it were mine, I'd probably send the bracelet for renewal, it will enhance the overall look. You may not have the right thickness spring-bars holding the bracelet on, as well, but those are a $1 item. Welcome to the sick world of vintage!

That watch for that price these days is a triumph. Send the bracelet to MY or another restorer and perhaps the head to LAWW or Ridley or ABC or whoever to make sure all is in perfect order, and you have a watch you could wear for the rest of your life. Or sell to some dude for him to wear the rest of his life. Or a lady!

I've looked on a few places for the year. It ranges from 1972-1974. How do you determine which is correct for serial 3638558?

Just happened to have this Hirsch strap sitting around. It will be safer than the bracelet until I can get it cared for! It isn’t my favorite and I think other straps will look better but I want to wear this classic!

I have never really been a DJ fan except for the silver and blue version but this one just looked right. I’ve worn it all afternoon and tonight changed to the strap and plan on wearing it all weekend. I have to perform a funeral on Saturday and preach Sunday and think this will fit so much better under the cuff than what I’ve been wearing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
