1680 red dilemma

Would love your input/vote on this.

This is my only vintage watch - a red 1680 sub. No box or papers but had a service in RSC London in 2013.

I bought this back in 2015, but what I'm finding is I don't wear it as often as my other modern pieces - I think it's cause right now I simply prefer modern pieces to vintage. As such I have started to consider selling it, but I do fear I will regret it in the long run - i.e. if I start falling in love with vintages 10 years down the line, something like this will be much harder to find.

Based on your personal experiences, would you:

1. Keep it, as perhaps tastes will change as one grows older
2. Sell it and use the fund for something that can be enjoyed now (as a side note, how do I best 'value' this if I go down this route?)

Obviously no right or wrong answer, just wanted to get everyone's opinions.

Sell it if you don’t enjoy it. You can always find a new red sub if you want one later.

If you don't need the money, I'd say keep it. If it's exceptionally nice, it'll always have value (and potentially continue to increase?). edit: just saw pics, yes it's exceptionally nice!

I say sell, there's no reason to keep it if you don't enjoy it and if you get the bug 10yrs down the line you can pick one up. Its not a unicorn.

I don't know what you have in your modern collection but I would not buy another modern if you have a couple already. You'll likely run into the same problem again.

If you’re not sure, hang on to it until you are. That’s a particularly nice example and replacing one like that in ten years will certainly cost you more than what you can sell it for now (already stratospheric $$). For general prices, look at HQ Milton. They have a good stock of red subs right now...a few Mk4s like yours.

Beautiful Red 1680... I'd definitely keep it and wear it more.

If you sell your Red Sub and then wander into a watch collector GTG or visit an auction house viewing for a watch sale and see all the collectors wearing their vintage Daytonas and Subs you will not be happy with your decision. And there will be no replacing your watch for less than 50% more than you sold it, assuming you have the confidence to purchase another vintage sub, the most faked watch on the market today.
Boredom is the enemy go the collector.

As others have already said, keep it. Unless you need the money of course. But if not, keep it and you'll likely fall back in love with it down the road. Or as another member here said, hold onto it until you're sure about keeping or selling.

red subs in nice condition such as yours are not as easy to come by as one would think.

10 years down the line, if you decide you want one again, you may find yourself liquidating majority of your modern pieces in order to get another red sub.

Absolutely correct. The one thing you can count on is that Rolex will make a million new, modern watches every year. No crystal ball necessary.

I get the whole, if you do not need the money discussion, keep it. I would say that is a school of thought but not the only one. The value of a watch is always important but for me it is do I feel special about it based on what it is worth and do I wear it. If the answer is I do not feel special about it and I do not wear it, then it goes. I have traded some great watches and retained some that are not so great to anyone but me. I want watches I wear and enjoy. The money is always a factor but not the most important. Buy what you want and wear what you own.

You will appreciate it as you get older. Keep it. Wear it for special occasions as it is a special watch. You will regret it.

Would keep and add to the collection.
However, some people collect just to collect and some collect to wear.
I couldn’t have more than two/three watches in rotation as I just wouldn’t wear them enough due to my job.

I’m a big fan of the 1680. I have two red 1680s. But, If you are not wearing it and don’t enjoy it, sell it and get something you will enjoy.

You could always wait until Basel World when Rolex reveals their new red Sub (my prediction). That would likely give a bump to prices like we’ve seen in Pepsi GMTs in the past year!

There's nothing wrong with preferring modern/contemporary over vintage. But, let's track back to your dilemma...First, I'd like to hear why you acquired the 1680 in the first place, then I'd ask you if that reason/desire is still relevant today. Next, I'd examine how many watches you have in rotation and what's getting little or no wrist time. Just to say, you might find yourself wanting to sell some of your modern watches too. Anyway, your best move is to think deeply about your own collecting philosophy and go from there. Too many voices can only confuse. My 2 cents. Good luck!
