HELP! Oris Aquis or Sinn U1???

Alright Folks -
I really need your help with this one. I want to add a sub $2,000 diver on rubber strap to the mix and it seems to have come down to these two watches. Problem is, I really like them both but they are very different watches. Sinn seems like it is more of tool watch and less casual in appearance while the Oris seems a little more 'sophisticated/dressier/fancier'. I really like the look of both but am struggling with this decision. What do you all think?

Here are the two I am trying to choose between:

If it was me I would go for the Sinn, I don’t have any very serious Tool looking watches, the Oris is a more versatile watch, and is quite nice as well.

I both are very cool watches, just depends what else is in your collection and how you plan on wearing it.

I have a Sinn U1 and it's a tank, but it depends on what else you have in your collection. Neither is a bad option, so pick the one that fills a void or will get more wrist time based on your lifestyle.

This happens every time I decide to add a watch. I narrow it down to a couple options and generally decide that I need both!

I have a submariner and a planet ocean which are the 2 most similar to the Oris. The only watch I think I have that's close to the Sinn is an IWC Aquatimer on a rubber strap.

I am extremely careful with my watches and take very good care of them. I know I know, watches are meant to be worn but... I really enjoy taking care of them so thats whats important to me. I bought a Tag Aquaracer on a bracelet to be more of an everyday beater watch and this Sinn or Oris will be the same but obviously on a strap not bracelet. By every day I mean, office, beach, boat, pool, skiing, taking the kids out just kind of an every thing watch. The Oris is clearly more suited to the office atmosphere (though our office is casual and I am in jeans every day) but I have plenty of other watches I can wear if I need something dressier.

Really struggling here! LOL

I've owed an Oris and currently own a Sinn (757 UTC). Both nice watches but I suggest the Sinn. There's just something a bit more special about the Sinn.

I would opt for the Sinn. Especially if you decide to sell it down the road. Sinn has a pretty big fan base-even among high end watch guys. Good luck with your purchase!

Everyone seems to have positive things to say about the quality and craftsmanship of Oris but I've read some conflicting information about the QC of Sinn. I have read many glowing reviews of Sinn but also many who have had bad luck with new Sinn watches. Any thoughts on that front?

Thanks!

I have owned a few Sinn and now an EZM 1.1. I never experienced QC problem with the watch from factory.

I read some people are experiencing otherwise, but they are taken care of by Sinn under warranty.

Between the U1 and Aquis, I would go with U1 because of the conventional lugs and SUB steel. Unless you are talking about one of those limited Aquis. Then it would be personal preference on style.

Is WatchBuys.com the only place to get the Sinn line?

I did have an issue with the chrono hand not resetting to zero. Sent it to RMG (US Sinn service center), they replaced the center hand, did a full service, replaced the copper sulphate capsule, refilled the watch with nitrogen, and shipped it back all for free. I bought it from the original purchaser and didn’t even know it was still under warranty.

Yes. The do have occasional road shows where you can see them firsthand. I think the next one is in San Francisco, but not sure when.

I keep going through the Sinn lineup of watches and am now oddly drawn to the 857 and 857 UTC. I know they are technically pilot watches but I think they both almost pass as divers and with 200m water resistance, certainly fit the bill. Thoughts on these:

Both great watches. The 857 UTC, with the added time zone, is a great package. I prefer extra complications which is why I chose the 757 UTC.

I would go Sinn. While I love the aesthetics of the Oris Aquis line, the lugs kill me... I've tried their bracelet version and it works well, but you want rubber, so you only get that one option if you go that route.

The Sinn is cool, not necessarily my first choice for a Sinn diver, though. That 857 UTC is a great looking watch, too. The pop of green gives it enough color (like my GMT II LN). And Sinn's Tegimented steel is pretty solid. I think these even have the water intrusion capsule (I forget what it's called) that their divers have.

I dont switch straps often so not overly concerned about the Oris lugs but definitely needs to be taken into consideration. The Sinn 857-UTC does have the water intrusion capsule you mentioned. Here is the description:

The case features a copper sulphate capsule which reacts with moisture to diffuse and absorb humidity in the watch. This capsule may be viewed through a porthole in the left lug, and over time will turn a deep blue as humidity is absorbed. This technology not only provides a more stable environment for the movement, but also helps to prevent fogging of the crystal when going from hot to cold environments or from humid to non-humid conditions (such air conditioned buildings).

This is gonna sound like I'm working on commission but the copper sulphate capsule, tengiment steel, faraday cage securing the movement, all add up to quite a lot of innovation making for a great value.

I agree! I’m sure some of it is great marketing but it sure sounds cool! I think I’m leaning towards the 857 UTC now!

Well, I just couldn't get past the beauty of the simplistic dial of the Sinn 857. Should be here tomorrow! Thanks for all of your input!

Here she is! I think it is a stunning piece. I love the simplicity and the tegimented case has an awesome look to it. Certainly no aesthetic QC issues here and the bezel is tight.
