Your life lesson

Being a newer member I am grateful to meet people from all walks of life. Joining the forum has introduced me to people that are probably punching above my weight (in wealth but not life) so I would be interested in what advice you would give to your younger self.

Having two young kids I want to pass on as many life lessons to prepare them as best I can. So...what is your life lesson?

My dad used to tell me...

"If you're going to be stupid, you better be tough"

and

"Experience and treachery win out over youth and exuberance every time".

I've learned in life that he knew what he was talking about.

Love it. Well, when younger I did plenty of stupid so pretty tough.

Onto experience and treachery!

Don’t worry about stuff you can’t control, it’s literally pointless. And life is already too short and too full of worry.

I’m priviledged to have spent time with hundreds of folk (if not more) approaching the end of their lives and the most common regret by far, expressed in one form or another is “I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying”.

Yeah, the first time I heard it was after doing something painfully stupid once it was determined the injuries weren't life-threatening.

I’m only 32 so hopefully I have a lot more life to live but my dad taught me a lot of good life lessons early on. A few of the best are as follows:

“You’ll never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul. You can’t take it with you so don’t get caught up in accumulating stuff”

“Invest in the things between you and the ground; mattress, shoes, tires, etc...”

“When it comes to money; save some, spend some, and give some away”

Having 2 young ones of my own, I’ve learned that time spent with the ones you love is the most priceless thing on earth. We will never have enough time so make the most of it.

Spend less than you earn.
Compound interest.
Low fee index funds.
Don't do anything you wouldn't want to read about yourself in the paper.

Decades of low-risk mutual funds should work out just great for you. A little put away every month really adds up over the decades.

Seneca's "On the shortness of life" pretty much summarizes life lessons for me. Short read.

Nothing is guaranteed - absolutely nothing. So smile and live like it, you may not be here tomorrow.

I'm only 35, but one thing I've noticed about human beings, in general, is that those who worry less or give less of a s**t about outcomes are usually happier. I think a lot of this comes with age and experience, but I have met a lot of young people who don't live and die by a 9-to-5 and are some of the happiest people I've seen.

I think the thing my parents taught me, which is different than the above, is to treat everyone with respect. Do I get upset with people? Absolutely. Do I get into arguments with people? Again, yes. But it's usually over a lack of respect on the other party's part, whether towards myself or someone else.

Also, teach them to disagree with someone or something while striving to understand the opposite viewpoint. This seems to be a forgotten art these days, and goes back to the idea of respect.

Treat folks like you would like to be treated, work your ass off, don't buy anything you can't pay cash for. It will all work out.

Try not to piss anyone off. Don’t burn bridges. Treat others as you would have them treat you.

And then when you do piss someone off, don’t sweat it. You did your best and you must realize you can’t please everyone.

Listen, pay attention to details. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated. Lastly don’t forget everyone has some kind of problem. Don’t add on to them.

I’ve heard about buying good shoes and a good bed because if you’re not in one you’re in the other, but like this extended version very much !

Avoid over procrastinating. Best work advice I’ve ever been given is that there will always be good ideas, but getting on and delivering them is what makes the difference.
