My Dad’s Rolex Datejust

Hey Everyone! Here’s my dads Blue Dial Rolex Datejust that he bought back in the early 1980’s from a local AD. He still has all the box and papers. It’s the most important possession and watch I have. I’m still debating on whether or not to get it serviced by RSC NYC. My dad told me he had it serviced once in the late 1980’s but it hasn’t been serviced since. I’m nervous that Rolex would want to replace parts of the watch and I prefer to keep all original. But just thought I’d share this picture of the Datejust

As Eliot said above, if it's still keeping good time and all, I would leave it as is and wear it.

That Datejust looks like it's lived a good life

Guaranteeing all original, don’t send it to RSC. you likely wouldn’t have an issue there but they may want to replace say the dial and hands to ensure it doesn’t flake or cause future issues. They wouldn’t do it without your consent but i wouldn’t bother. Contact one of the other shops that can handle it.

Contact Los Angeles Watch Works concerning service, or a couple of other vintage specialists (others will be along to recommend). If you send it to a Rolex RSC, there will be nothing left of the original but the case and movement.

So sad that one must protect such a treasure from the company that designed and
built it. Maybe try posting this in the vintage section, I’m sure with some patience you
will find the right watchmaker for your beautiful Datejust.

I agree here. That's not a complex watch to work on doesn't need RSC. LA Watch Works would take could care of you.

ABC watchwerks(also in LA) or LA watchworks as mentioned will do a great job at a fair price.

If you have to go RSC:

Rolex usually will not touch anything you do not wish them to if you tell them explicitly. After they get the watch and inspect it, they will call you before performing service depending on what needs to be done, and then you can confirm you don't want the dial changed, etc. Usually there is no problem but I have heard some cases where even after doing what I said above, parts were still replaced, but I think that is rare.

I was in a similar situation. I inherited my fathers late 80's DJ, he never had it serviced. He had purchased it at Tiffany's so the dial is very important to me. When I called RSC in Dallas (I was going to DFW for business and thought a great opportunity to drop off the watch) I was informed that if they found any corrosion on the dial they would replace it and keep the original. I passed. I had local and highly reputable AD with well known service (had some sort of certification) dept. take care of the watch. Worked out fine.

That's a gem. Easy to pass on RSC in that case. I wish Rolex would start being realistic with vintage or older pieces. To dismantle a piece like that with service dials and hands is a tragedy.
