Interested in getting my 1st Paneri (need some help)

I'm new to Panerai and slowly learning. All these PAM numbers seem to be overwhelming to me. Is there some general guide to understand what each digit in the model # means?

I'm looking on getting the 005 or 111. Since those are discontinued, I'm trying to determine the current production equivalent and the change points.

Any suggestions for a 1st PAM?

Hard to beat a 005 or 111 (or a 000, of course). I personally would look for a good pre-owned full set of one of those. The equivalent new ones have certain compromises (like snap-on case backs with lower water resistance) that make them less desirable, IMHO.

There is no rhyme or reason to the numbering. There are a few similar references that might be only a single digit different (111 versus 112 or 024 versus 025), but in general there's no rules. I think a PAM111 or PAM005 would be a great place to start. I had a 005 for awhile but sold it to finance other things. I definitely miss it in my collection. I think your on the right track: 44mm Luminor case, black dial, few complications if any.

I bought my first and only Panerai and it was an 005. I sold it later on for more than MSRP, but wish I had it back.

Hi, welcome to the pam addiction.

There is a saying in the Panerai world which is perfect for beginners: "Base is king!" The fewer the complications, the "purer" the watch in terms of Panerai dna. I do love the complicated pieces (my current one and only pam is a 233), but if you are still getting a feeling of what you like, the choices you have listed are great ones.

One thing that is important and you didn't mention: what is your budget? Also, are you open to the 47mm models? These open up a whole other realm of possibilities.

My budget is around 5-7k (preferably buy new). As for the size, I'm thinking 44, but am open to 47 (just need to try some one first).

Try on the 47mm. Take it from there. If you like the size, a 372 or 232 would be amazing alternatives, in the Luminor and Rad families, respectively. Both available inside your budget in slightly used condition.

For that budget if 47mm is okay,you can get either 232 or 372 pre owned

For 44,go with either 000/005,111/112,176/177 for simple models (and probably on the lower end of your budget) or 233 for more complicated model (on the higher end of your budget)

Another option will be submersible from 24,25,305,389 et al...even 364 is obtainable in your budget (but it's so thick)

You should get whatever you like most and only take people’s advices to increase your knowledge of the brand and its different models.

For me the choice was made based on the characteristics I wanted, and the one I didn’t want at all.

I wanted:
- 44mm luminor
- petite seconde
- steel
- dark dial
- 3/6/9//12
- manual

I didn’t want:
- any complication (GMT/date...nothing!)

I went from there and narrowed my choice based on the looks and additional features each watch could have.

As a first time buyer, I faced last year the same problem you do. It really a personal choice.

I wanted a base model so that it looked as Panerai DNA as possible. I liked the fatter lugs of the Luminor and the iconic crown guard. Wanted a small seconds to see movement of the watch on the front. Didn't want to buy used since I wanted to establish a relationship with an AD. Wanted manual wind because I actually like winding my watches.

So, for me it was the Panerai Luminor 510 8 days.

Your own decision tree will likely lead you to a different and completely valid choice. I don't really think you can go wrong as long as you personally love the watch you decide on and don't allow others' viewpoints to sway you towards something you don't truly have a connection with.

Panerai is traditionally not very busy on the dial, 44mm, luminor, etc. I personally went 8 day movement because I don’t wear the same watch every day or two days, and an 8 day let’s you wear it once a week and it’ll be spot on.
