40mm DD & 41mm DJ. Is it just me?

As a long, long time collector there is something about the size of the DJ being bigger than the 40mm DD and the GMTs/Subs. I know it’s only 1mm and maybe it’s my OCD but for years Subs/GMTs/Ex2s were all 40m and DDs/DJs 36mm along with the Ex1. I have a DD 40/Sub/Daytona and a new 39 mm Explorer and they all seem in proportion. I’d really like a DJ again, it was my first serious watch I bought new. Silver dial, engine turned bezel on a Jubilee bracelet. My wife has a 36 mm DJ which Is just that little bit too small. Every time I try on the 41DJ it just looks a little too big. I’d love one if it came in 39mm but I can’t see that happening. Is this just me?

I prefer the 36mm DJs. I don't think the bigger DJs look "right."

No it's not just you. Tried on the DJ41 blue dial/jubilee and although a lovely watch, it overpowered my wrist, unlike the GMT Batman which I usually wear. If the did a 38mm it would be perfect. How they decided on 41mm, a weird size in anyone's book, mystifies me??

I prefer watches on the smaller side, but I wouldn't say no to a DD40, even smaller wristed guys/gals can wear it easily. The DJ41 is just a tad too big though, 40 like the DD would have been perfect IMO.

You are not alone. While I really do like the DJ41, I really prefer the DD40. What a difference 1mm makes is very true.

I was hoping to get a DD40 this year, but I'm afraid my budget just doesn't allow it. The alternative would have been the DJ41, but I am actually starting to consider the DJ36. Not only for the size, but there are a couple of dial options that are not available on the DJ41.

Even with my 7.25in wrist, which is a comfortable size for almost any watch, I really love the smaller DJ36.

The odd thing is, if I was going to get a Day-Date, I actually prefer the DD40. Part of that, however, has to do with the updated President bracelet. Sorry to ramble a bit off-topic.

Yip, but it still looks too big. I've said it here before, walked into an AD to buy one on my last birthday and was shocked at how big it wore. It's all I see now even on display, the watch isn't right for the style. Right now I'm wearing a 38.5mm Nomos Tangente, and that's a watch that has a reputation for wearing big, but it's fine on my 7.5 inch wrist.

Tried on the new Bimetal 36mm a few months later and it felt great, I'm slightly put off by how small it looks off. Ideally, I'd like a size between the two (never tried an OP, as I need a date).

Never tried on a DD40 either, how big do they actually measure? It's difficult enough to fine comparison pics of a DJ41 and DD40 together.

Yesss. People are saying “41 to big, 40 (or 39) is perfect size” made me lol. I get it with the DJ2, but the DJ41 (at like 39.8mm or something like that) appears perfect.

The Dajejust II for me worked but not the Day Date II. Is that weird?

I've yet to try on the new DJ 41.

I have both dd40 and dj41. It's strange but I actually find that the dj 41 fits better on the wrist than the 40. Im probably the odd one out but to me it feels just a bit smaller than the 40. The lighter weight and better fitting jubilee in comparison to the 40 could be what makes it seem like that though.

It’s 39.5, you’re not far off.

Most people seem to forget, especially on this forum; it’s not about the 1mm or 2mm difference on the case size itself - these additional mm are negligible.

It’s the lug-to-lug length that increases with each mm that the case increases by, that makes all th difference.

The DJ41 has the same lug-to-lug length as a Sub or a GMT. It’s even got a larger case and and lug-to-lug than the Daytona.

A watch like the DJ41 shouldn’t be the same size (or larger than a sports watch).

36 is the the classic size and if they did a 38mm it would be perfect.

And that is coming from someone who has owned both a DJ2, and a DJ41.

It’s the lug-to-lug, that makes it wear larger than it should.

DJ41 has a larger dial (the actual dial under the crystal, not the case diameter) than a 40mm sports model. The flashy bezel, polished lugs and thinner profile make it appear it takes more real estate on the wrist.

Yeah I’m not talking ‘appearance’. I own one, so I have observed closely. I also have calipers.

I am fully aware the case size is not larger than a Sub, but there is all of half a mm difference.

In my post was talking about lug to lug - you seem to have glossed over my point. Measure it. Same as Sub. 37.5mm.

I also think there's something screwy about the size/width of the bezels as compared to the dials and cases on the bigger DJs, or perhaps it's the angle of the bezels. They just seem off.

I’m more interested in how they look and feel on the wrist.

I guess you need bigger wrists. They do make a DJ36 so not sure what you’re really claiming? The DJ41 has lug to lug that’s too big? I guess you can say that if you have skinny wrists but the watch design is perfect as is... and it doesn’t wear or appear larger than its size. The ruler doesn’t lie

Jeez. Did don’t realise I was writing in code.

I was simply saying, that at 41mm (39.5 in reality), the size is too large for watch like the Datejust, regardless of mine, or anyone’s wrist size - that’s my opinion!

Sportier watches like the Sub, GMT and so on, look fine as a larger piece.

I think that the DJ looks better as a smaller piece, like the 36mm or, a 38 would be great, AGAIN, regardless of anyone’s wrist size.

My point, again, is that the DJ41, has the same lug-to-lug length as some of the sports models, and in my opinion, it doesn’t suit the model. That sort of larger measurement should be left to the professional range.
