Lusting after a PT 40 Daydate
As a long time watch guy but a new rolex forums member I would like to get your thoughts on the PT vs the WG. The pricing difference is large and the funny thing is that currently PT is worth less per gram than gold so even considering the density difference, the cost of the PT is definitely in the look.
Would love to get your thoughts on this as I am struggling at the cost difference and the practical side of me says to buy a WG DD 40 but the emotional side of me says to get the PT one. The WG looks so grey when compared side by side to the PT one. Thanks on advanced for your opinions. |

If you are even considering platinum over white gold and if you can afford it, go for it. It's a huge difference and if I learned one thing in my hunt; never settle.

I had the WG DD40 with a Blue Dial but it never really sung to me, so I got the PT DD40 with blue quadrant dial with Blue Romans.
The PT is an awesome watch and you very quickly get used to the extra weight. The polished centre links of the President PT bracelet are much brighter than on the WG IMHO.

Thanks guys. I can afford the WG, but would have to sell some pieces in my collection to fund the PT.
Keep the thoughts coming. |

Why not the DD2? You get a larger watch and more platinum at a better price.

No reason. The DD2 would be fine as well. It would just be a little harder to find new than the current watch. I would like it new as I would not want a polished PT watch and the pre owned PT watches I have seen all seem to be polished.

The WG is certainly a lot warmer looking than th PT. The PT polished surfaces are like a mirror. I went with the PT because I somehow couldn't get the fluted bezel to work for me. It looked good in pictures, and on other people, but I couldn't personally pull it off when on the wrist. The smooth bezel also wears slightly smaller, perhaps that's why I prefer it. I have a smallish 6.75" wrist.

You and me both although I probably need to wait a year unless I also want to sell some pieces. Look forward to seeing what you end up with!

I personally would go WG...and then add the PT Daytona if you still have the itch for a platinum watch. I think this is a pretty good combo.
An added bonus to the WG is that you get the fluted bezel, which is one of the watche's characteristic features, IMO. My two cents. |

Saw a DD 40 in the AD window (platinum) the other day, must admit it looked the business! A step up from WG that's for sure.
By the way that's USD $51,600 equivalent or GBP 39,000. Platinum.jpg |

I would go for platinum 100%. It's amazing to feel and the heft is unbeatable. The best of the best imo.

Good to know. I probably should have played around with the configurator online but I just always assumed they were only made with the blue dials

That 51K price is real good. Aren't they about $67K in the US?

I was set on getting the DD40 in WG with blue dial. I tried it and the platinum DD40 and huge difference for me. The heft and how pure white the platinum is won me over. I have the DD40 platinum with stick markers and ice blue dial.

When buying watches at this price point NEVER EVER settle on anything except what the heart wants.
It will be an expensive lesson otherwise. |

PT is harder on tooling and much more time consuming to work with. That, rather than the material cost differences (when PT was more expensive) is why PT is the pricier option in watches.
It's also supposedly what there's not fluted bezel on the PT DD. The machining complexity is too great. |

For me, the classic DD is the one with YG.

It's a killer watch for sure......if only it had a fluted bezel I'd definitely be all in. Alas....I should be thankful it doesn't for my wallet.

It depends on whether you want a fluted bezel. I think the fluted bezel adds a lot to the look of the watch.

This is general advice that works for ME. I think the WG/green dial and the RG/green dial DDs are beautiful. And I'd love to own either one. But if you prefer the platinum DD, in whatever dial, get it. It's cheaper in the long run, too.

can you guys also make some comments on how the normal wear and tear goes with the PT? Is it about the same as WG?
