In praise of the SD4K

There have been a number of posts about the SD4K or SD4K vs Sub, or SD43 in the last little while. I thought I’d give my story and a few photos taken today on Caribbean vacation.

I have always loved watches, and formed the opinion that the only jewelry I would ever wear was a watch, a wedding band, and a cross, but for a long time I never really wanted a Rolex. I first started to lust after having a Rolex when I got my wife a YG lady president and when it was delivered I just held it in my hand and marveled at the feeling of quality and the presence the watch had.

When I started researching Rolex, I found out about an amazing complication I never knew existed, the multi time zone display.found on GMT Master and GMT Master II watches. This became my grail and I resolved to get one.

I started lurking on this forum late in 2017, just as SS watches started getting into a bubble, and one of the watches I read about was the SD4K, the fact that it was quite rare, short production run etc. I figured I’d get a GMT to wear and an 116600 as a very occasional wear, but more of an investment, to be protected more than enjoyed. In a very short period of time, I acquired both the 116710 LN and the 116600.

Like many on this forum, I soon became addicted to buying Rolex Watches and got a number of very nice ones over the course of the last 14 months, but I really can’t keep the 116600 in the box and out of the rotation, I am always wearying it. I like the thickness and heft it has,, the symmetrical look with the minute markers all the way around the Bezel and the lack of a cyclops over the date. I also appreciate the fact that the diameter is only 40mm because while my wrist is 7 3/4 inches, it is really not flat, it is quite rounded, so bigger diameter watches just look too big looking straight on , but a little height from a side view looks right.

Ultimately, the GMT Master II should be my favourite watch, but ultimately I know that if for some reason I had to sell all but one of my watches, the last two I would be agonizing over would be the GMT Master II and the SD4K I’m honestly not sure which I’d keep. I’m kind of surprised in retrospect, the GMT was a Grail, and the SD4K was only meant as an investment, but it might be my favourite watch in the world now.

So here is proof, my SD4K is the watch I chose to bring on my March break vacation with the family.

Are the lugs broader than a Sub, or the same?

The lugs are narrower than the ceramic subs, I’d guess a little thicker than the 5 digit subs, but I don’t have a 5 digit Sub to compare with. Certainly looks a bit thicker than my 5 digits, the 16570 and 16710.

I for one don’t mind the thick lugs on the 6 digit sports watches, but for those who like the ceramic Bezel and/or the maxi dial but dislike the Maxi case, an SD4K is the only choice so far.

From looking at it, I thought so. That's nice.

In my collection I had a black sub and green sub - knew I had to ditch the black sub due to redundancy. Debated SD4K vs SD43 for a while... Ultimately, I went SD43, but that was a tough one. Still think about this one, SD4K is an excellent watch.

SD43 is also an excellent watch. My brother wanted one, and I sourced one for him, I wore it back to back with my SD4K for about an hour to decide if I should keep it for myself. I liked it a lot, but I think the SD4K won it for me by being a bit smaller.
