Greetings. If one was looking to buy a lifetime watch that was durable, other than platinum what metal ages best? I dont know too much about aging. I do know that rolex WG is not rhodium plated so it lasts longer than regular industry WG...how does rolex steel look like after a couple decades? I'd like to know how fluted bezel DJ age.

i would suspect YG and Ever(R)ose (despite the name) would age less well than Pt for sure because its Pt950 then SS then WG. Would love to know if im correct though

All PM will age better than steel. That is why they are PM.

ive seen plenty of tarnished YG and RG Rolex watches. Its not the gold, its the other 25% of what's in the mix

Buying a lifetime watch...how does it look after couple decades?

I would say, after couple decades, any metal will look like the day you purchased it.

Sorry guys, I misunderstood the question I think. I guess I would put better odds on a PM being in better shape than steel in a lifetime. Better for me isn't about tarnishing, it's simply about lasting. I know gold can be submerged in saltwater for 100 years and still be fine. Can steel do that? Maybe, I am not that familiar with the latest stainless steels. I know the steel is harder than PM and should show less wear.

I just purchased this WG President A serial 1999 it was unworn never polished. Got it this week. I think WG ages very nicely. But so does the steel.

If not abused and if properly maintained with service, I'd venture to say any Rolex watch is going to be able to last longer than you are.

First post here! I’m a material scientist. Like mentioned before, steel is much harder and will resist scratches much better. Gold and platinum are noble metals and will resist better corrosion and oxidation. Therefore, if main concern is which one will resist better daily beating: steel no debate. If main concern is which one will look better in a few hundred years, well PM for sure!

That being said, with reasonable care, both should outlast all of us easily!

Material scientist here!

SS is harder.
PM resists better corrosion and oxidation.

Therefore, for daily use: SS.
Very long term (think hundred of years): PM.

That being said with proper care both can outlast all of us!

that ancient stuff is usually pure gold right? or higher than 18k. Ive seen of some gold stuff come out of egyptian tombs and that stuff is pristine. But its probably pure gold or very close to it. where as a 30 year old YG rolex can be pretty tarnished.

Modern steel and ancient steel are not the same. And the ancient gold wasn't either. That comparison doesn't say much about modern watch materials.

Very true 18k YG alloy is very different than 24k pure gold (AG)
