Icon20 Deep Sea Sea Dweller goes into Hospital

i eventually got to take my DSSD to Rolex Hospital yesterday to have the bezel fixed. the bezel is only meant to turn anti clockwise but i somehow have knocked it so it now turns both ways and the ratchet seems to have gone all funny.

Any way thought it would be a easy job for the rolex technician to pop the bezel off and repalce the parts no probs.

Little did i know it now requires major surgery for the bezel to refiited and for the mechanism to work correctly, apparantly it has to be set in a jig or vice of some sort, but they did not elaborate. Its a complete refit of the bezel assembley mechanism.

The rolex engineers have not had anymore DSSD's in for repair and have been asked to send the report on the bezel problem to Geneva.

Not only was this one of the first DSSD's in the Uk its also the first to be returned to rolex for repair.

I have also asked them to re-calibrate the watch as it seems to have lost 5 mins over the last month, which i feel is not good for this watch of this quality or value.

Apart from that i still love the watch to bits and felt naked when they took the watch from my wrist.

so i had to go home and put a green bezel sub on, now i match my dad who is wearing my 16610

Just curious if it's covered by the warranty. Because it can be a manufacture defect.

I'm sorry for you, Mark. It is still Rolex's problem even if it is out of warranty. Paying such amount of money for a watch means in my openion service for life time even if you pay money for that.

Mark I'm very surprised with you. An expert such as yourself taking only 1 watch into St James Sq. This isn't like waiting for a pint of Guinness you know. After 5 mins the Guinness is always ready, unlike a Rolex inspection!! At St James Sq if it's not a basic regualtion issue they will generally keep, hold and repair the watch over a period of weeks normally taking anything up to 6 weeks !!!!!! I always take a spare to wear home just in case. Shame on you mark !!

Are they repairing there or sending her to Bexley?

I really hope the DSSD is ready for the 15th my man !!!

i have never been to rolex in st james, i always go to the Bexley head office where i know the service guys, graham and cormack, andi have a friend who is quite high up in the sales dept, he does me loads of favours, was tempted to collect my 5513 and 1680 back from rolex bexley but that can ewait a few weeks.

i did not think that they would have needed the watch for a few weeks, i can actually imagine them sending the dssd back to geneva for full evaulation... i hope not.

will be there on the 15th, might wear my ss daytona but with the slate white gold face, which is stunning.... or my 1655

I use to deal with Derek Bluer who was the head honcho at Bexley but haven't any idea if he is still there anymore?

Sorry to hear about the DSSD, but at least you've put her in the best hands possible so she'll run PERFECT very soon!!

Way to break the barrier on the first DSSD repair/service btw!!

Sorry to hear of the bezel issue seems like a lot of work to reset it, not like the older type bezel that would have been a 5 minute job.Very surprised at your watches timing performance the 3135 is normally fine. Wonder if it could be down to the new in-house escapement spring, heard of quite a few GMT11C with slight timing issues on various forums.

it does seem that they do have a few issues from time to time, but generally all the time pieces they produce are great, with no probs, but it only takes a little lack of concentration for it all to go wrong.

Well Marke not so much quality control when the bare uncased movements are tested at the Swiss COSC.A lot could happen to that movement on the shipment back to Rolex until its cased then shipped out worldwide as a finished watch.Would doubt if they re-time every single movement they re-case and ship out to the dealers, all they want from the Swiss COSC is the COSC test certificate.
