Should I bring my SubC to Mexico City?

My SubC date is the watch I usually travel with. Never having been to Mexico City I'd like to some insight from anyone who's been there. Ive never thought much about traveling with it since I've owned it (about 7 years) but now with the shortages and price increases I'm not sure anymore. Is Mexico City somewhere I'd have to worry about wearing it ?

I wore my DD40 to CDMX. Awesome place. I stayed at the W Hotel in Polanco. Didn't get to venture too far into the jungle, but did check out most of the historic, touristy spots. Have a blast and just use common sense.

Been to Mexico City twice last year on a business trip. First time, I took my z-blue with me and GMTIIC LN on the second trip. We stayed late after work for dinner at various restaurants and never felt uncomfortable at all.

Do want to mention that I was always accompanied by the local office team when we went out for dinner, etc.

I stayed at the Mayan Riviera and had no problems. I also never left the resort. I have no plans to go back to Mexico...the ride from the airport to the resort was a little unnerving. To play it totally safe leave it home.

Mexico City is huge. Asking that question is like asking "Should I wear my Rolex to NYC?" Just like in New York, there are places you can wear it and places where you probably shouldn't.

It seems unlikely that you'd be going to the bad parts of town on your first time to CDMX, but if you think you might, and you don't want to leave it in the hotel, then don't take it.

We used to go to MX all the time (Playa del Carmen and Cancun).

No mas.

Safer places to go - if I had to go for work, I'd take my G Shock.

Okay. With all due respect. Most replying on this thread are clueless. Mexico City is just as safe (or unsafe) as many US cities (of course, don't venture in less-than-pleasant parts of the city at 4AM by yourself). If you'd wear it in Chicago, you should objectively wear it in CMDX as well.

Really this is about your safety, not a watch. Do you want to wear something that makes you a target to hit over the head, stab, or shoot? Don't draw attention and make yourself a target. The watch can be replaced, but that's not what's at stake.

I have a Sub C and travel internationally all the time with it (including to Barcelona!) but I would not wear it in Mexico. I don't have any really good explanation why other than I have heard too many stories about robberies/theft in Mexico.

I’m just lurker of this forum, but felt like I should share my experience with my (former) GMT. Was in an Uber stuck in traffic in Polanco and heard a knock on the window. Look over and there’s a gun in my face with a guy demanding for my watch. Didn’t even care about my phone or wallet. Police think he might have been following me for a while when I was walking around in Polanco, but couldn’t say for certain.

Thankfully no one was hurt and the watch was insured. Whatever you decide just be careful and be aware of your surroundings.

Don't take your Rolex. I had a business trip back in the late 90's to Mexico City. Took a stroll one afternoon only a few blocks from a nice hotel and was robbed. Today it's the murder capitol of the world. Don't go there.

Actually it's not even in the Top 50. St. Louis, Baltimore, New Orleans and Detroit are far more dangerous.

Wow... seriously?

I wonder how many that have replied here have actually been to CDMX.

I’ve been there three times in the past three years already. Assuming you’re staying in the touristy areas, and especially Polanco, you have nothing to be worried about.

The top 1% live and play in Polanco. Your Rolex will be just another in a sea of other submariners.

I am not Mexican or have any family from Mexico. Just total unbiased opinion from someone who’s been to the city multiple times over the years.

Like someone said here earlier, same question could be asked about LA. Would you wear your Rolex to Compton or Inglewood? What about Beverly Hills? They’re all in LA!!!
