I have been biting my tongue for so long, and only screaming in frustration and laughter to my family.
Does it drive anyone else nuts, when a prospective buyer say they need to check with their wife or significant other to proceed with a purchase? ![]() |

YES, if it is something that needs to be discussed with a spouse it should have been done prior to even showing interest to the seller.
That being said I feel sometimes this is just a line to get out of purchasing or sales pressure depending on the situation. |

This is precisely what it is. Basically, they’re telling you, “No, I’m not buying.”

I'm going to have to ask my wife if I'm allowed to respond here.

Yes, that would bug me as well. Why waste anyone’s time, if you don’t have “permission” to purchase

On the upside, it gives us all a chance to blame our wives instead of the other way around.

Losers - tire kickers - sissy Mary’s
I typically discredit anyone when they say that, as true as it may be it’s extremly rewarding in the rare instance they come back and the item is sold after they “spoke to there significant other” muahHhhha

"buyers" shouldn't reach out until all bases are covered...

Thats why couples have their own mad money accounts. Women buy shoes and handbags and men buy watches.

I can certainly understand your frustration. As a seller, it's your responsibility to run your business & to have someone waste your time & theirs is silly. I'd imagine it's the equivalent of an OTPHJ.

When a customer would say that, my response was:Ok, you ask your wife if you can buy the car and I’ll ask my wife if I can sell the car.

No, this does not bother me. But then again my wife would be with me, she has a nicer watches then most, she would be the one telling me to buy the watch if I really wanted it.

You and I have been through this one a few times. If my wife is getting the watch for me, it is common courtesy and respect to let her know what I’m doing, not asking for permission. She bought eight out of my nine Rolex watches, the other one from my “secret” fund. But I do understand your point.

I said exactly that when buying our car. 30 seconds later I was back at his desk agreeing the sale.
Made sense we were both happy with the deal before finally locking things down.

Whenever I hear that phrase, I just assume they meant:
“I am not happy with the terms of this potential deal, and no longer interested in discussing. I am going to pass on the opportunity. Good day sir. “ But didn’t want to say all that? ![]() |

If you're not necessarily "in the market", you get inspired by something awesome, and then you confirm with the home front, I don't see that as being a big deal. Kind of normal, IMO.

If I am spending 50K on a watch I will provide my wife the courtesy of a heads up. But I would have already done that before contacting sellers. Less than that I will let her know, maybe before maybe after.

That’s merely a negotiation tactic Brian. Similar to when a car salesman says he has to check with his manager.
It allows the negotiator to pretend they are the good guy who has to convince the other party of the deal. I’ve never encountered this with a watch sale though ![]() I’ll admit I’ve used it with contractors at my home but that’s different.

No big deal either way. Many purchases are made on the spur of the moment... you were not really looking, but suddenly you saw it.

Code for "I was never serious and was just trolling for a low ball price" and they don't have the backbone to just say no or they changed their mind or whatever.

I feel much better knowing I have not lost my mind over this.
The one that pushed me over the edge was for a very inexpensive watch, he made an offer, I accepted, he made the paypal payment, and then said "oops". I better check with the wife first. Then asked me to hold the funds for a day to sleep on it too. Then cancelled. blah blah blah. |

When I bought my last motorcycle, I was home before she was, so I just parked it next the my other one in the garage. When she noticed it later when she came home, all she needed was info on why this new one was better than my other one.
When I changed my 216750 for my 16713, she liked the 16713 better. She said the EXP II was nice looking but the GMT II looks like a Rolex. Nothing more needed saying.

If you're listing multiple watches a day on TRF, you're bound to get the occasional tire kicker.

When I was in NYC a few years back meeting a few friends for dinner, we popped into a Tourneau before our reservation was up. They had a used Aquanaut. I was seriously considering it, but I believe if was a 5165, and upon inquiring further, I found out they were also missing boxes and papers. They were asking $16k. One of my friends with me was shocked that I didn’t need to call my wife first to get the OK. I later told my wife this, and she was like “why would you need to ask me first? It’s your money, and you’re smart enough to make good decisions.”
