Early Explorer
Visited one of my best friends today.
He showed me a watch that he inherited from his grandfather. Pic below Unfortunately I am not that familiar with Rolex models from this era. Did a quick bit of research on the inter web. Looks like it is something between a 6098 and a 6298. I think the bracelet is clearly after market but looks good on this watch. I understand the crystal was also replaced. would really appreciate if anyone could confirm the model and provide any additional info. The watch does not work at the moment. I am sure it needs a service at a minimum. My buddy wants to get it repaired and wear it. It’s a family heirloom that he intern intends to pass down. I am concerned Rolex will not touch it due to its age. Does anyone know anyone in Toronto who could help him out? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. The early Explorers were made for the Canadian market long before the sport model Explorer with Mercedes hands that we all know and love today.
The bracelet looks much newer but not a lot of info on the bracelet from the pics provided. If you pop off the bracelet, the model number of the watch is engraved between the lugs. Rolex will not touch it due to its age, you will need to send it to an independent watch maker for a service.

Thanks. That is very helpful. I don’t really want to play with the bracelet as the watch means quite a bit to my friend. Want to point him in the right direction to get it fixed.
I use Damiani and Humbertown to service my watches. Not sure if they are right for this job. Csongor at Damiani could do it but not sure if he is still there. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, the watch itself has a great weight to it despite being a 36 mm. I may have to start looking at a 1016. Need to learn a lot more before jumping into this pool. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Tell him what you want and don’t want. Keep it original. I had this model. Beautiful Canadian model. |

Service at RSC in Toronto is actually pretty good with vintage. I’d check first before discounting them. No polish, no problem. Will only replace what you want replaced. Aftermarket bracelet may be a problem, of course.
