PM Decision Time: Apples to Oranges?
The wonderful world of SS Rolex watch collecting, as it relates to life in general for many of us, I think has been all about the "experience". More specifically, what has owning your specific pieces been like? For me, pleasurable and fun in all instances, each with its own purpose and statement...but now I'm ready to make a leap and trade up a few SS pieces to fund a PM watch.
The SS market is such that I wouldn't really be out of pocket for a PM piece, and I've decided to take advantage. On the flip side, the SS market being like it is, holding onto what I have would perhaps be the wise choice and I've certainly been lucky and grateful for the experience in having them, but as curiosity has taken me further into the grail zone (dun dun dunnnnn), I've realized I can absolutely own a single piece and be content the next 30 years...hopefully In any case, I'm between a WG Day Date 40, likely with a white or black stick dial for versatility...or a WG GMT II Pepsi black dial. Of course some people prefer apple pie to orange frosty's, or cake over pie, but since this will become my only watch I need to choose carefully. Versatility is obviously important, and while both of them would fit that need its turning out not to be an easy thing for me to decide on. I'm 39 yrs old, a traveling consultant, and very active with outdoor fitness stuff. I'm leaning towards the GMT as it would supposedly "suit" my lifestyle better, (insofar as wearing expensive jewelry is concerned but I digress) and I'm wondering what others who own a DD would think? If you were to only own one watch, and it were between a Day Date 40 or WG Pepsi, what would you pick? |

WG daydate for a one and only but i would go with the silver quadrant roman dial, although both the stick motif dials (silver and dark rhodium) are nice. (i'm 27)

I have traded in several SS models to get into the PM pieces and don’t regret it one bit. You’ll be glad you did. Given your active lifestyle and age I think the gmt is a slam dunk. Get the DD when you’re closer to 50 :) |

Aesthetically, a daydate is much more versatile than a GMT, and I say that as someone that probably prefers the GMT overall as a watch.

With your constant travel, I would say the GMT fits the bill. It has the look of the SS so it flies under the radar, and can easily dress up or down. Honestly, either one is an amazing choice. But definitely stay in the WG metals!

Yes - whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but supposing this is your only 30 yr watch. I am really into the idea of having a piece that is literally with you throughout a large part of your life, and how personal value with it will grow. I've owned a few SS pieces, and I've decided I just don't "need" more than one watch anymore, as I rotate them often and no one in particular makes me get the fuzzies (though I've loved owning them).
May I ask why you'd go with the DD? Seriously just trying to hear opinions, often there are angles and points that haven't occurred to me - hoping to hear from folks who've been in the game a long time and have some sage advice =) |

Moving up to PM is a natural progression, at least it was for me.
I still collect the SS pieces, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t get much wrist time. Strangely, I’ve also moved away from professional models as well. The DD40 is my go to watch these days. However, I can’t do the fluted bezel. For this reason, I stepped up to the platinum DD40 because it has a smooth bezel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For you it sounds like the best bet is the GMT. For me based on your criteria I would select the DD, but in RG.

GMT all day long and twice on Sunday. Not even remotely close.
Just don't buy YG and expect to survive a hot tub |

30 yrs or 30 days or 30 mins. Once you go PM you’ll either go ALL IN or you’ll RUN back to SS!
If you truly think you’ll have only on PM, then it’s the WG DD40 without question.

I’ve been thinking similar thoughts lately. I strive for simplicity whenever possible and am considering applying this ethos to horology. If it’s going to be just one, I’ve concluded that the DD dresses down better than a sport model dresses up.

The BLRO is flashy because of the colored bezel. It's pretty bulky as well. The DD will wear better. If travel is your thing than the BLRO might be the right choice. The DD fluted bezel does give it a lot of sparkle however. Neither is a loser. For my wrist I'd go with the DD.
I might add that planning on one watch for 30 years is like planning on staying at one weight for 30 years. The odds are against you. |

If only 1 watch get the DD40.
Its timeless, it will dress up or down and honestly what else can beat a presidential Rolex? Nothing. |

If you purchased your SS models from the same AD then hopefully you should have an easier ride than most should you feel PM isn’t for you. I would think twice before trading them in unless you’re sure but then I’m still seeking my elusive first Rolex!

That is a tough choice. Both are great pieces that could fit your lifestyle well. Based on your active lifestyle and need to travel for work, I would lean towards the BLRO. You could always add a DD in the future and you would have a killer pair!

I have owned multiple DD's and a WG BLRO. I preferred the look of the DD but the bracelet and clasp of the BLRO. The DD has no adjustability other than adding or removing links. For the money that you pay for PM it should fit perfectly every time you put it on with minimal effort. Of the two you have put forth for comment I would go with the GMT but would have to look at the YG/WG Submariners as I like the dials and bezels more and the Glide Lock Clasp is worth the price of admission. Good luck.

The GMT has an adjustable bracelet and a guarded crown. These both are good help for a daily wear. When you do sports or fly, your wrist swell a bit and you will love the adjustability. Especially for a very heavy WG watch and bracelet.
The watch is very stable as well in my 2+ years experience. You can wear it as a beater one an only watch. The only thing I’m missing is obviously the weekday window. If that’s not your concern the GMT is a good choice throughout. The DD is looking really impressive, however not everyone I have shown it to sees it like that. |

Day Date for sure. I just have a hard time paying for a PM watch that you can buy the same watch in SS

Graduation!
You can’t miss. DD is beautiful. As an owner of a GMT, it’s a great thing for I have, but as a daily in PM I would likely lean toward the DD. I bought a WG Daytona... and it’s not a daily. Just make sure the weight works for you. |

Dd wg
For me, I do not travel out of the country much so the GMT with it's busy dial does not make sense to me. When traveling stateside I can quickly add an hour or three without needing an extra hour arm.
As I age the date is important because I forget it readily. The day listed is just gravy to me. I also feel the WG DD does not stand out just like a WG GMT so this is a wash. I wear a watch because to me it's like jewelry, style or fashion with a proper function. The DD has more style, IMO, and dresses up better for your daily work routine, a night on the town or your Sunday best. I'm turning 50 and I feel a Professional watch does not fit my lifestyle. When I exercise I use a smartwatch to measure all the vitals I seek to know. All that said, I am new at this and I have a Z-Blue Milgauss. In the next 5-10 years, I will need/want at minimum a Day Date or Date Just. I never thought I would like the fluted bezel but now I realize the beauty in it. Go figure. Good luck with your decision. Whatever you choose, you will always be on time :-). |

I don’t think it’s been asked...what’s being traded in?
And my thoughts would be.... I’ve consolidated to obtain a PM piece, but always had at least a SS piece as well. But.. I wouldn’t be happy without at least 2 for variety. Just my own taste. At your age, you can wear each one of these references with confidence. Given your lifestyle description, and assuming you’ll be wearing your watch during all activities....I’d say GMT would be your best bet. I love both of these models! The other thing I’d think about, since you’re talking white metal, the SS gmt and DJ41 would cover both situations you’re contemplating..”looks wise” Just my thoughts...good luck |
