Worth buying a PM Day-Date from an AD to build a relationship?

So there's a particular Day-Date I'm interested in. Looks like reputable dealers sell it for ~$29k. It has an MSRP of ~$37.5k and I can get it for ~$32k (+tax though and that's ~9%).

My goal is long term to establish a relationship with an AD so I might get a look in at some SS models. I'm really not sure this would make a difference and I'm "losing" ~$6k out the gate.

Try and talk to the AD and ask if it will give you access to SS models. Perhaps suggest that if they made available a certain SS model for you, you would buy this DD from them...

ADs want to sell non-SS watches, they use SS to achieve that :)

This is the only way I would even consider your proposal. Otherwise, I would just take that $6k and put it towards the SS I wanted.

I agree, Package deal all at once or nothing. You can most likely do this in the Caribbean w/o the tax. Don’t rely on the relationship to maybe get SS later.... imho

Bundle a DD with a steel. Even if it's a sub no date or sub date. It's a start.

DD still goes for -10-15% off depending on which model and colour face.

...And this topic; I've seen a few of them before.

Spend 32K so that maybe one day the AD might let you buy a 10K watch?

No.

No way will I pay a 6k premium just to “build a relationship “ and MAYBE one day you can get a SS piece from them, that’s like paying 6k above a 9-10k watch IF they will sell one to you. That’s just plain crazy. In a few years or sooner this SS craziness is going to cool down and you’ll be able to buy one at MSRP. Besides buying one PM piece does not put you on their VIP list at most ADs. There are people who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on jewelry at a much higher markups than watches in those stores. Save your money and buy the watch at the best deal you can get and enjoy it until the opportunity for a SS comes up at MSRP.

Still can't quite get my head around the notion that an adult would entertain the idea that dropping $30,000 on a watch you really don't like in order to PERHAPS get anointed to buy the one you really want. There's a very instructive old saying:

"I don't mind getting screwed, I just like to be kissed first"......and

Failing that, I have some investments with Bernie Madoff. Buy some Lehmann Brothers futures and get the Bernie M deal. You'll need to collect them when Bernie is released. Bernie personally guarantees the instrument.

Make sure you get a package deal and walk out of that AD with the SS sport you want. Don't just get onto some waiting list. Sale persons at AD are changed as often as underwear...Otherwise no. just buy from grey and save $$$$

No. Just buy them here or from a rep. seller on eBay or Chrono24. I never understood why someone would want to pay retail for something when they can get the same thing in the gray market for possibly less. At least you'd save on taxes (hopefully).

OP mentioned “there’s a particular Day-Date I’m interested in” so he’s not dropping it on a watch he doesn’t like.

Otherwise, I agree, that wouldn’t make sense at all.

If you are set to buying a pm Rolex, and would like to bundle that watch with an SS that you are particularly interested in, you should politely ask if such deal is possible instead of assuming on a relationship. It does work sometimes.

Since you actually want to buy a day-date, it’s perfect leverage.

It’s basically doing to the AD what ADs do to us:

- “If you want an SS, buy a PM.”

So now it’s your turn:

- “If you want me to buy this PM, give me a 15% discount and an SS at the same time, otherwise I go to another AD”

Give them a reason to open that safe.

My Lord, may I direct my learned friend to the following paragraph which in itself establishes a Prima Facie case. My Lord, I quote:

“My goal is long term to establish a relationship with an AD so I might get a look in at some SS models. I'm really not sure this would make a difference and I'm "losing" ~$6k out the gate”.

I submit that clear intention gives force to contract law. And ask your honour to consider this Ratio decidendi and other support in obiter.

It seems that the purchaser has revelealed his true motivation as being based on engendering reciprocity for the sole purpose of purchasing a stainless steel watch or watches.

Unless you went to school with the AD salesman or he/she is a relative of yours, you can forget building a relationship with an AD in the current climate. Now is just not the time.

Also, it's not that AD salespeople lie. They really have no clue about what stock they are getting from Rolex. Large chain AD's are even worse, stock is delivered to the Head Office and it is up to the Head Office to decide where the pieces go.
