Rolex 6094 or 6294?
I have an Oysterdate from 1961 that is marked 6094 between the lugs (serial number 707260), but 6294 in case back. The case is a screw-down crown type.
My question: How likely is it that Rolex would have placed a 6094 between the lugs while using a 6294 case back? I have reason to believe this is the case, based on where I purchased the watch. Thanks! |

No replies?
My only question: Did Rolex sometimes put a case back on watch that had a different ref than the case body, at the factory? The serial number matches the timeframe of the caseback (Late 1961) |

Yes, a lot of case backs were shared when identical cases were used on multiple models or the case back was replaced early in its life due to loss, damage or some other reason.

First, Merry Christmas! I hope everyone has had a good holiday season.
I’m resurrecting this thread to ask what the difference is between a ref 6094 and a 6294? I read that the 6294 has the screw-down crown and usually different hands. Is that it? The subject watch has 6094 between the lugs and the serial number, consistent with 2nd quarter 1961. However, it does have the screw-down crown. And, it does have a case back that indicates 6294 and 2nd qtr 1961. Also, I have seen several examples like this one where the case indicated 6094 but with a 6294 case back. I’m convinced they did sometimes come from the factory like this. It’s all an interesting study. |

Yes, the previous reply is correct. Rolex back in the day would use whatever they had on the shelf at times. The most famous is the 5513 Submariner had many leave the factory with 5512 case backs because that’s what they had.
