2017 Planet Ocean vs 2009 Submariner Date

Hi guys,

I’m currently in a position to trade my excellent condition 2017 Planet Ocean plus $3k for a good condition 16610ln. I’ll probably have to send it in for servicing once I get it. I love my PO, but the sub is also very appealing. What do you think of this trade?

I currently have 116610LV and SD43 in my collection.

Then why trade it? You already have a great sub.

I think I’d keep the Planet Ocean (great watch!) especially as you already have a great Submariner and SeaDweller. Better variety.

Yes, I’d do it. The 5-digit Sub is very comfortable, and with the aluminum bezel, will add some vintage-y charm to your cerachrom 6-digit collection.

Given your collection I think you may find the 5 digit sub a little on the light side. I would keep the PO.

Would pass on a fair condition Sub that needs a service.

Might I suggest, and here I go thinking outside the box again, trading for a DJ II smooth bezel on jubilee. I think you would like the size and heft of this watch, and you may lack a more dressy option in the collection. Good prices on the DJ II's right now so it wouldn't require much cash.

I would take the $3k and purchase a BB58. Then you have expanded you collection in a new direction with a similar sized diver that does not need a service once purchased.

I agree, use the money to expand your collection. Maybe vintage DateJust?

Never sell the PO. Fantastic watch and if you love it, you'll miss it once it is no longer in your possession.

I have never sold a watch I purchased, they are family!

I’d keep the PO too. And I don’t even have a sub in my collection. But I do have my beautiful PO 2500 and it will stay in my collection despite me wanting a sub some time in the future :)

Great suggestions guys. I agree, the weight and size of the sub may be a little lighter than what I’m used to. And I enjoy my PO quite a bit too. Looks like I’ll be staying with my current collection, and using the extra $$ to add another piece in the future.

Thanks again for the feedback.

It doesn't make sense. The Planet Ocean is the best watch in every sense (finishes, materials, caliber) and on top of that you have to put a lot of money.
You already have a 116610LN and an SD.
If you are very much in love with 16610 sell 116610

I’d keep the PO, you already have two great Rolex’s, that would be a down grade and you loose 3k, the blue PO is beautiful!

Keep the PO. It's an awesome watch. I agree with expanding the collection. I would even look at one of the Seiko Spring Drive LX models just released at Basel. They're a little more than $3000 (ok, $4000...) but they are a unique movement and have a super comfortable case (the MM300 is one the most comfortable watch I own after my GMT IIc, and the new LX line is titanium).

I'm a longtime Sea Master fan, having worn them exclusively for more than a decade. But that was a ways back. Great watches in their own right, but I also had some prejudices against Rolex.

Having shed those prejudices, I now look more objectively at both brands. As my tastes continue to evolve I find I'm less into the large wrist presence. Before, 40mm watches were too small for me. 42mm was and remains my sweet spot, and up to 45mm is fine for me. But the right watch in 40mm is no longer off my list. In fact, my 16710 BLRO is my grail watch and on my wrist.

As a diving watch, the SD4K for me is ideal. Similarly, I have a great fondness for the Sub. But I need a date window on all my watches. I love the elegant simplicity of the SD and Subs. IMHO, Omega has made a mistake with the aggressive wave pattern on the latest Sea Masters. They're also quite thick vs. their Rolex counterparts.

I would trade an Omega SM and a reasonable amount of cash for a Sub Date.

I'd keep the PO. You have two Rolex divers, why need another? I realize this is a fan forum & that semi-rhetorical question might be balked at, but I'd hold onto the PO. Actually, I'd sell the PO outright & put the money to a TT DJ, but I'm biased.

Keep it if you want all divers but maybe if you want all Rolex get a DJ or if you want to stick with omega get a nice AT.

given your collections, I'd trade the PO in on a 5 digit GMT over a Sub.
