Would you consider this an upgrade?
I have a lovely 10-year-old GMT Master-II 116710LN in frequent rotation. Now that the prices of the 116710LN have skyrocketed, I'm able to afford an upgrade by trading it in, plus a little cash. I have my eye on a late 90s Daytona Zenith 16523 or an early 2000s model with the upgraded in-house movement. Would this even be considered an upgrade given the surge in popularity and value of the 116710LN? Now that I am older I can wear a two-tone Rolex with confidence and the 90s Daytona really interests me. But the GMT? Man, that's a great watch.

I wouldn’t consider that an upgrade.
I say just go with whatever you like best! The GMT is also a really nice watch. |

Personal tastes aside (the only Daytona I like at all is the white/ceramic), as others have said it's all about your own preferences. How much will you miss the GMT if you get rid of it? How much will you wear the Daytona?
The good part about upgrading is that the GMT is not so rare that you'll never be able to replace it down the road if you decide you made a mistake with the Daytona. It might cost you a few shekels, but it's do-able.

I wouldn’t consider it either up or down. It all depends what you want from a watch.
Personally I probably would as I prefer the case of the Daytona, but sounds like you may regret giving up the gmt. |

Upgrade--if it's the one that Paul Newman wore. It's a more complicated watch inside. If you can't decide...own both.

Upgrade is not equal to a better watch always. Pick the one you’ll enjoy best. To some people that’s a 500 dollars Seiko diver, to others its a 150k PP.

Thanks everyone for your input. At the end of the day I think I'd cry a river of tears if I gave up the GMT. I'll find another way to fund the Daytona. Much thanks!

Nope. The Daytona has poor legibility, just as a starting point

If you upgrade to a white or black 116520, then yes

Yeah, I agree. I now think that the 16523, while nice, isn't enough of an upgrade to sacrifice the GMT. Besides, I travel a lot, so the GMT is more practical.
