Icon20 To buy or not to buy... Thats is the question

Hi everyone.

Just a quick intro. I'm just getting into the Rolex brand (or watches as a whole for that matter). Been looking around a year now.

The first watch that caught my eye was the BLNR. I thought it was stunning. Ideally i'd like one of these and a Sub date black. Im on the list for the sub and don't mind the wait (2 years or something crazy!). I keep going to the AD ect so they remember me.

Now the BLNR.. Ive been offered one for just under £12,000. I really love the look of this watch, but am I crazy for considering that much money for a SS?

I really need some expert advice here guys, as I'm quite new to the brand.

I don't plan on selling the watch ever, so price trends don't bother me, although if it drops to 8k in the next few years I'll be a bit gutted!

So I'm just looking for some advice really, I think 13k+ is too much, so if I waited 6months - 1yr and it climbed in price id definitely be priced out.

I just don't like it on the Jubilee either, otherwise id wait for one of those. Does anyone know if the bracelets are interchangeable?

Any advice would be appreciated, I feel quite lost!

Richard

Get the sub on your wrist first then worry about the BLNR. The grey prices may change within that timeframe.

Yes, you can swap bracelets.

For me the wait is part of the hunt and thrill, but I’m not someone who just got into this hobby or will ever get out. Watches always have been a life long fascination and will always be. Took me 14 years to source my Daytona and I did that at retail. In the interim I purchased and enjoyed many brands. So my advice is source the sub first, and stay in the hunt for the BLNR and enjoy the hunt.

I agree with waiting as I think it's part of the fun. But in today's market unless you really know your AD, it could likely be false waiting.

I will say that I was 50/50 on the new BLNR on jubilee... until I saw it and put it on my wrist. Holy. It's absolutely stunning.

I took the approach of going for the BLRO through grey channels to satisfy the itch and don’t regret the grey premium for a second. That should settle you down while you take your time for subsequent buys through AD’s. It worked for me but it’s s very personal values based choice that will draw strong opinions for and against.

If you don’t intend to sell don’t put too much thought into resale. If the price today is justifiable to you buy it. At the end of the day it’s a Rolex. It’ll always have value.

I’d probably go grey for the first piece for instant gratification then AD for second and enjoy the hunt.

For the second walk into every AD you can no matter where in the world you are. You never know what they could pull out of the safe if your timing is right. You could be hunting for 2 yrs or 2 weeks. That’s the fun part.

invest the money - may grow faster than the watch. but may not. I sold a lange 10 years ago, and the money has done better than the increase in prices.

The bracelets on the Blnr Oyster VS Jubilee are not interchangeable. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Since you asked....
-find an older model you really like and start with that. Stay out of the hype of the new GMT stuff.
-It doesn’t sound like you have an unlimited budget, and even though you say it won’t, you also say that price drops would hurt.
-spend a few grand on something used, wear it and enjoy. If you like the hobby, you can buy something else later.

If you’re going to spend a handsome sum on Rolex, make damn sure it’s the watch you want. Regret can be even costlier......

Thanks

No, I definitely do not have an unlimited budget. A price drop would only hurt in the sense of "if i waited i could have got the same watch for £2k less" for example. Its like a what if type thing.

I suppose my question really is: Is this a 12k watch? After buying it, will i be thinking that its not worth the money paid, which will outweigh the enjoyment of owning it.

What other models do you suggest I have a look at?

It sounds like its a sub you want? But this has come up and its the "but I can have this now" feeling.

Deep breaths. Personally, I'd wait on the sub and pocket the difference.

The truth is I wanted the BLNR at first, but I wanted it from an AD (had no clue about wait times)

So when it was discontinued I put my name down for a sub, but as time goes by I keep on going back to the GMT

Mind you, quite likely either in 2020 or 2021 the current Sub 116610LN would be gone and new one will substitute it - likely 126610LN. And your list membership will be gone waste. At that time most likely both previous reference and new one would gravitate to what greys now ask for previous and new GMT 126710 BLNR.

You’re wrong. People started swapping bracelets as soon as the BLRO came out and the new reference BLNR is no different. The springbars are unique to the different bracelets, you just have to use the correct ones. The case fit, end links, etc are interchangeable.

Thanks kind of it. My only regret would be that perhaps down the line, i might look back on it and think, its not worth what I paid.

Or maybe I won't and I'll love it, this is why I'm kind of lost

Yup, they definitely can be swapped.

I think 12k for the batman is good,it’s the market value although I have seen much higher.
I don’t have a crystal ball however I believe these watches are only going to rise in value.
Also the batman with the oyster bracelet is discontinued.
I personally have this watch and love it.Life is too short, buy and wear now.

Update: Thanks for all the comments. After a lot of thinking, I have decided against getting the BLNR at this time. Even though I am new to the brand, I know I'll LOVE the watch but I cant help but think that down the line I'll feel like it's not a £12k/$15k watch, which will affect my love for it.

I also really want my first Rolex experience to be from an AD, I kind of want it to be special if you know what I mean.

So the next question is: Do I stay on the list for the Sub, or do I put my name down for the new BNLR and change the bracelet if I'm not 100% when I see it in person? Decisions!

One things for sure, being a millennial, I hate waiting! :)

You might as well stay on the list for a sub, you'll probably get one eventually. The blnr will be a long wait and you may never get one without other purchases from an AD. With regards to changing the bracelet, youd have to source an oyster and that may be expensive.

I'd just buy the blnr at 12k and enjoy it, that's if you can afford it. If you cant then get a sub at mrsp one day

It seems the general consensus ITT is that the £12K is worth it for the watch. Would people tend to agree?

It's worth what the market says, if people pay 12 that's what it's worth. On a personal level it's down to how much you want it v how much you can afford. Would it bother you if it dropped? If so then dont buy it

I don’t think you will have to wait 2 years for the sub, that seems a bit long.
Up here in Scotland I think I waited about 2-3 months.
It’s a classic and you won’t be disappointed.
The blnr on oyster (old model) is a great watch as well but the sub gets more wrist time, I’ve not seen the new one ‘live’.
