Jealously for a watch?

I switch my watches since I now have a few Rolex's. I prefer my Rolex Sub 50th's F-series; but I am being more careful with it now since it's ridicolous value.

Anyways, I've started to wear my dad's yellow gold oysterquartz, which I do love. It brings back great memories from my dad. He loved this watch. However, since it is yellow gold, it stands out like a sore thumb. I am also fair skinned, where my dad was always tanned; so it sticks out even more. I see my friends and collegues always staring at the watch, and I am concerned about the attention. Some even commentted that it's show off day today I guess to me.. I was just floored. How are others able to pull off a yellow gold Rolex, but I receive so much attention; which I do not like. Often times, I wished my dad would had bought a white gold version so it wasn't so flashy. He was also a tall man at 6'0'', large build; I'm only 5'10''; medium build.

Ideas?

Who gives a crap what others think.

They do not (or SHOULD not) run your life, YOU do.

If anyone has a problem with your watch, it is likely due to jealousy. Otherwise why would they even care, or open their mouth.

True. Just don't like the attention. I'm in my mid 30's so maybe it's just the age group. It could also just be my thinking.

They are jealous because they wish they were the ones with the honor and privilege to be wearing such a nice, special watch. In Italian we say 'chi disprezza, compra' meaning those who devalue something, do so because they wish they could be buying it, but can't. Enjoy your dad's YG OQ and let your friends comments roll off your shoulders

Sounds like you need to go white gold. The sad fact is that if yellow gold does not suite your skin tone it just does not look right.

Spoken like a true gentleman. If the OP's "friends"/colleagues/peers feel the need to call it a "show off watch," then let them go green with envy. You enjoy your father's watch. I know I treasure everything my father has ever given me, whether it be a watch or an old license plate from his first car, or a handwritten note on my wedding day.

Exactly! Take it in stride. I probably would've replied "yep, thanks" and kept it moving. You're too young (or old, however you want to view it, same sentiment) to give much of a f*ck what someone glued to their iPhone has to think of you. If they judge you for what you wear on your wrist, their praise is not something I'd think you should seek. Now, if you wore a gigantic DIESEL or MVMT watch, we'd judge you, but that's because this is the internet & everyone is a keyboard warrior

If you give a damn about what friends and colleagues think of your watch, you should not be wearing one. Or you could stop giving a damn. Who's life is it anyway?

I’m lucky to have stopped caring what others thought of me in my early 20s. At 34, I’ll flavor flav it into a room if I wanted to. stop caring what others think or it will consume you. Enjoy the watch you paid NOTHING for and brings back great memories, even if those around you think it’s extra.

Who cares what others think... but it sounds like you do so:

I'm going to be real with you... adding on the diamond dial.. your skin tone.

I don't think it looks great. People sense insecurity and weakness and they pick at it. Sounds like the watch is wearing you.

You have to have a certain personality to pull off that whole package and its a personality that says yeah its show off day i'm gonna show you mother later...

Well maybe that's a different generations response.

The watch has obvious sentimental value to you, that's the part I'd focus on and not so much if people are staring at it or making comments to you. Keep it and wear it proudly!

Perhaps these comments are not mean spirited. The folks in my office are pretty rough with each other. It's all in good fun. If that's not the case, keep up what you're doing. D-bag co workers get little attention from me.

Is that 36mm? It does look big on you. Color is fine. Yellow gold looks good on everybody if it is to their taste. Yellow gold has been around forever and I seriously doubt, until very recent times, people ever turned it down because it did not match their skin color. No offense to you but do not let the current yellow gold anti hype spoil your great watch from your dad.

It could be the diamond dial which is more eye catching for the 3rd parties.

A dial swap to something more demure may be an option if you like the watch overall, but just want to tone it down a touch. Obviously keep the original to put back on down the road one day.

Otherwise it sounds like a bit of workplace bullying which just isn’t cool at all, so that should be dealt with.

A very close friend of mine had a similar situation with his dads yellow gold AP jumbo, yellow gold inc bracelet and diamond hour markers. He felt that the watch was too bling for him but because of the sentimental value he couldn’t consider selling it. I suggested that he give it to his wife and she now wears it and it looks amazing on her.
