Pay full amount upfront...

I accompanied a family member to an AD in central California, he was interested in a Daytona reference 116508 with the green dial.
He was advised that it would take 12 months to fulfil, which wasn’t an issue. The AD then advised that they would require full payment upfront and if there was any price increase he would have to pay the difference.
I have made a number of purchases in the UK and I’ve never been asked to pay a deposit or full amount upfront prior to a watch arriving at the AD’s.
Is making full payment upfront a common practice in USA ?

If the AD goes under, say goodbye to your cash.

Its pretty much a special order for you. Why wouldn't they ask for a prepayment on a expensive watch?

This is ridiculous, this cycle has to end. I personally wouldn't give full amount upfront for any PM watches, especially this over hyped one.

Well it’s either that or the AD will flip it to a grey market seller along w/ a high dollar watch. But yes I’ve been asked for full upfront payment. Some parts of the world, official AD ask you for $500-$1000 over retail to guaranteed you a spot.

It’s freaking insanity!

Dang, that’s crazy.

One AD asked me for half up front for a Datejust that I wanted to see, which they didn’t have.

I asked “what if I don’t like it once I see it in person?”

They replied “you still have to buy it.”

I said “never mind then” and bought it at another AD.

I know a Datejust and a gold Daytona are different watches, but handing over over $30k and waiting for a year?

I would try another AD.

Don’t do it. This is crazy. In addition to bending over backwards to get one of these things, you now have to due diligence your AD too?

You should ask him for his shops financials just for kicks and phrase it as your making sure we won’t close shop the next day

Not really normal for that watch since it is insanely hard to get and they will sell it in a second if he doesn't buy it. Then again, you at at their mercy because of how difficult it is to get. Speak to someone higher up there and try to negotiate a smaller deposit.

As a show of good faith, I offered a substantial deposit when I ordered my 2019 Dj a couple of weeks ago,
AD required no deposit ( WOS, East London).,,,

Agree... never in a zillion years, lots can happen in a year.

My nephew has been chasing a Batman. About a year ago our local AD said they would get him one and he had to pay a substantial deposit upfront. About two months ago the AD called him and said they lost the Rolex line and they were issuing him a refund of the deposit.
IMO the AD acted honorably. They required a deposit and Nephew agreed & gave them one. Store policy is up to the store. We are free to accept or reject.

$35,000 up front?
Wait a year?
On a watch they can sell in a second in the event I change my mind?
No way.

Just in case people don’t know, Rolex is cutting AD’s left and right. Giving an AD money upfront is a huge risk. Some will do the right thing and some will not. Is it worth the risk? I’ve recently had two bad experiences with an AP AD and Tudor/Omega AD. One would think they would be reputable, but both are scumbags and crooks.

Have to agree anyone paying the full retail price for any watch which they have to wait weeks, months, or a year for must be sixpence short of a shilling.

Pay full amount upfront...

A full deposit for 12 months is insane. That’s a hard pass for me. Nothing more than a greedy AD.

Agreed

When you consider that this is high end luxury jewelry paying without receiving is even crazier

Desperate times call for desperate measures

Um maybe because they are in the business of selling expensive watches, and we, the customers, are not in the business of handing out 12 month interest free loans.

I'd leave a deposit to show that I'm serious. I wouldn't pay in full. 12 months is a long time and a lot can happen.

I special ordered a Mercedes. The dealer did not ask me to pay up front.

Nothing special about a watch that requires payment for a promise.

There is a local dealer here in Virginia that requested payment in full for an out of stock watch. I’m not sure if that makes it “the norm.” Nevertheless, I walked. You have no idea where you are in the queue, nor whether the dealer is actually going to honor the queue.
