Bye-bye Big Watches?

Like many of us, I have lived through the Big Watch revolution with Panerai's, Big Pilots etc, but lately I noticed a change of heart. I am a pretty big guy with a large wrist, but more and more I find those big ones a nuisance.

I got rid of the Deep Blue not as much dues to its size, but more its proportions and its "quick fix" under-cooked, "me-too!" overall nature.

So today I most wear just two Sea Dwellers: the 666 and the SD43.

As much as I like many things about the SD43, I notice that I grab the 666 most of the time.

For some reason it just looks and feels more natural. And, amazingly, its smaller dial is perfectly readable.

”Big” is a subjective term that one should define in a general statement.

Even “conservative” Rolex has introduced a new 42mm-44mm watch each year recently. It seems the average popular size range, pending taste and physical size, is 39mm-42mm for men, with 34mm-40mm being the new ladies size. The days of 34mm-36mm as men’s size will never return.

I personally define "big" as 43mm and up.

In 1984, when I bought my 666, it looked big. Then, during the Revolution, it started to look just too small, so I stopped wearing it.

These days it looks just right to me. :)

Fencer, it's good that you have an opinion and have found an equilibrium for yourself, but I wouldn't read any kind of trend or "revolution" as you call it into your personal beliefs. Glad you found what works for you but dissing the model that a lot of members here wear and adore isn't really the right way to get your point across. JMHO

With Rolex making more models that are larger than 40mm and Patek even making their newest sport models over 42mm I don't think its "bye-bye big watches". I do think the trend of overly large watches (larger than 44mm) is not as popular as a few years ago but I doubt we'll ever go back to 36mm being the standard size watch for men.

I won’t wear a watch under 43. The SD is absolutely perfect imo. 40 and under is too small for me. I might get hung for saying so, but I’d kill for a 43mm Daytona.

I try not to pigeon hole myself.

If I like something, I like it.

Just bought an incredible speedy at 44.25. Typically I like something closer to 40-42, but this watch is awesome.

Besides, this post is kind of funny only because to many anything over 40 is too big.

Hmmmm. 666 huh?

Maybe something more serious is going on here.

Just sayin'.

Some people thought skinny ties would never come back. Some people thought bell bottoms would never come back.

All things fashion are cyclical. Those cycles of popularity may be shorter and shorter, but, everything is cyclical.

To most people, watches are fashion. To the people on this forum, they're much more than fashion.

Small (very small) watches for men will come back in style - it's bound to happen. It just needs Gucci or Prada or Versace to feature them in a couple of shows and that'll be the trend.

For me, I like 36mm - 40mm. That will probably never change. When every designer or store is pushing 30mm watches, I'll still be wearing my 36mm - 40mm. And, when the 50mm "wall clocks on a wrist" come back in style, my watches won't change.

Agree and this is where I land on it too

OP, it often has more to do with how the reference wears vs. the spec that is advertised. I wouldn’t rule out any watch I am interested in based purely on its advertised size without trying it first.

36-40 just looks right. But its all fit. If you are a big guy 40-42 will look right.

depends on your frame. Like putting a slim model in a size 56 suit..ain't right

Looks like you’ve found what you like (today). Btw, both of your current watches are very “big” for watches, historically speaking.

Luckily, we’re all different, and there are many watches out there for everyone. Personally, I buy watches, not trends.

But you are talking function and proportion. Like comment number 14 said, there is function and there is fashion. A few years ago (Dynasty) women and men were wearing oversized clothes with massive shoulder pads. This lasted a few years. Now were into "skinny". But that being said, for women skinny is in but with large accessories including watches and jewelry.

Panerai style oversized were started as a macho thing by Stallone and Arnold to name a couple of "trendsetters'. On most people these are proportionally ridiculous but they are a fashion trend and that is still here.

So using common sense and visual perception as compared to fashion is not really going to fly. In fashion nothing is out of the question. And since the cell phone came out, watches are now jewelry and a lot of the companies are owned by jewelry and fashion conglomerates.

That is exactly how I used to feel, but who knows, maybe I am just getting older. :)

BTW, I wear it on fully extended bracelet, no links removed.

I have one watch left over 40mm, out of 8. I had 4 ROO's at one point. I think 42-44 have their place and I have a 7" wrist, but I have found my sweet spot and that's 39-40.

I don't think smaller watches have been super disruptive to the recent trend of larger watches. That being said, I've definitely noticed a marketing push recently for "smaller" watches but I think it's largely due to the rise in interest for vintage pieces. Large audience publications like GQ have done a lot in the past year promoting smaller watches and vintage dress pieces.

Trends come and go but the 40 (and ballpark) is the new 36.
Has been for a while now and seems to want to continue. Just look at all the releases.

I started wearing 42-46mm watches, then I went to 37-40mm, now my range is 38.5-42mm.

Height is also an issue for me now, anything over 13mm feels too tall.

Hey. Dont sleep on the over 40s. Experience matters in some cases.
