Current state of Rolex. Glass half empty? No. Glass half full!

I see so many threads on here about members being frustrated not being able to get a Daytona or a GMT (glass half empty). Well this thread is a little different. And I know there may be some forum members that may not like my approach. I get it and I understand. So 2 months ago I called my hometown AD where I have a very limited purchase history (under 10k). I gave them my word that if they could get me a GMT that I would buy the 37mm Everrose yachtmaster at the same time. My wife wanted out of her old Datejust. And the 37mm would match my 40mm that I currently own. So it took 2months. But it worked. And yes I plan to sell the GMT and sell her old Datejust to cushion the true out of pocket cost on the 37mm Yachtmaster. So this thread is different because its not often we see a thread on here that shows a member taking advantage of the current state of Rolex (glass half full). And the AmEx points that I accumulated on this purchase was awesome too!

So you bought the GMT (a very desirable watch that many wish they can buy at MSRP) simply to defray the cost of the 37mm RG Yacht-master? I'm confused.... If yes, your just making the Rolex problem worse.

If you don't plan on going back to the AD in the future seems like a good move.

I think the OP is too cheap for that. He's using the old 'read-between-the-lines-send-me-PM' sales technique.

Nothing wrong with the pseudo trade. If you prefer the YM over the BLNR then sure, personally Im not a fan of the PM YM.

Oh, I'm no longer confused. With that said, thanks for contributing to the Rolex shortage of SS models for those who save up an entire life time to try and purchase one at MSRP from an AD.

Well, you can't really blame OP for making that decision and everyone is happy in that equation. The AD sells a high profit watch, whereas OP gets to recoup part of the cost via the GMT. Thats how the game is played these days.

I am not a fan, but I respect it.

No PM’s necessary. The watch was sold before I got it. And they also agreed to buy the old Datejust. Sold to a grey dealer for the quick flip.

Well played. look how positive the outcome is, the wifey is happy, the dealer loves you and your out of pocket expenses minimized for just taking a part of the game.

Please Daytona next. You're my hero for the day.

Wasn’t meant as a troll post. Its no different than a post from a member sharing his experience on an AD visit. No different than a “is it safe to wear.......” thread. And in my intro to this thread I even acknowledged the fact that I realized that I knew some members here would not like it. Yes I’m sure it rubbed some people the wrong way. But on the flip side someone may read this and say you know what. Im gonna try that. And for that person then this was an informative thread. I have learned so many things throughout the years on TRF. And appreciate so many people here. And if anyone here is familiar with me responding to threads or starting threads here and there never have I been cyber bully. I have always treated everyone here with nothing but respect. And will continue to do so. So you guys can say its not classy on my part. Fine. All I did was use the system to my advantage so that I did not spend unnecessary money. And also racked up a lot of AmEx points doing so. We are talking about a $22,000 watch. That after the sell of the Datejust and the GMT I paid $9000 for out of pocket. I call that winning. I don’t work for Rolex. I don’t make the rules. Why get mad at me for using the system to my advantage and playing it instead of the other way around?

You’re right. You don’t make the rules. No need to get mad at you for playing the game. As they say, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

I do have one question...

Did you tell your AD up front that you planned on flipping the GMT immediately?

If so and they didn’t care, more power to you.

If you didn’t then I start to lose respect as I can not buy into lying and pretending to be someone you are not.

I’d rather pay full price and not lie to my AD than save a few grand by misleading them into selling me a watch I don’t actually want.

That being said I’m curious to know what conversations transpired.

I think this sort of thing happens all the time. Especially where the ADs are looking to bundle to sell a SS watch. If a bundle is the only way to get the watch, people who only want the SS take a hit on the PM. People who actually want the PM come out quite well. Does anybody here worry about the person who bought the PM to get the SS and then sold the PM at a big loss.

While I would want to preserve my AD relationship, I can understand the OP playing the game.

Well. I originally got on the Daytona list with them when it was first announced. I got the run around like most people. I got on multiple lists of all ADs I had relationships with. And I went through the emotional roller coaster of being fed BS after BS. It took me 1.5yrs but I got the white dial daytona. Not from this AD but a different one. And in all honesty this AD I got the GMT from......when I called and gave him my proposition the response was “you’re a smart man. I think the higher ups will go for this because it helps our books.” No I did not tell them. Why would I? We are talking about an AD that had no interest in getting me a GMT or Daytona if it was not with a bundle like this. Or if I wasnt spending thousands on thousands on jewelry. And in all honesty I dont think they care. One of those “see no evil hear no evil” kind of things. So I have been on the other end of the game waiting for my Daytona. There was even a point where I just stopped going on TRF because I was pissed I couldn’t get my Daytona. I was over watches. And there was a time whenever I was in a new place I used to love to go into AD’s. No more. It’s like whats the point? There is going to be nothing in there. Bottom line this AD was happy to sell me this bundle blindfolded in my opinion. My take on the comment of “you’re a smart man......” was basically them saying you understand how the game is played now and we will work with you.

Fair play
Fairer Play to come on TRF and share the story
Fairest play to stand up for it against the WIS legends.

Not bad turn around - I would have at least tried to sell it private for a week to cushion the margins even more.

Grats!

Pretty much. If I were to do something similar I certainly wouldn’t come in the forum to brag about but I guess it depends on the AD in question and whether or not you care about you‘re relationship. With that being said their‘s only so many bridges you can burn...

I have no problem with it. You just used the current state of affairs to your advantage.

I think it would have been easier to just get the YM discounted from a grey though.
