Anyone replaced their Explorer with a Sub?

I love my Explorer but have always liked the Sub as well. Starting to toy with the idea of trading in my Explorer for a Sub but worried I am going to regret it.

Has anyone here done it? If so, regretted it or never looked back?

If you doubt about it then don't do it, buy the Sub and keep both.

I added a Polar Expl II to my collection - and it compliments my Sub nicely

started with a new Sub Date in early 2016. It was wearing me. Attention- too much and not the good kind. sold it -Been wearing a 16570 for 3 years. It's fare more rare to see and doesn't attract the unwanted attention. Subs are the BMW 3 series of watches.

I've read all the other comments on this thread and feel that they are being very unkind about what must be the quintessential Rolex. The Submariner is undoubtedly one of the most iconic watches ever made. It certainly put Rolex as a brand, on the map. If you are into watches and specifically Rolex watches then to have a Submariner date or no date in your collection is certainly a serious consideration. There is nothing wrong with the Explorer or indeed the Explorer II. But, don't hesitate in swapping either for a Submariner. You won't ever regret the decision and if by some slim chance you do, you can always trade down again easily.

I agree with this reasoning.

For the record, my first Rolex was the Submariner, then I got the Explorer; however, they are two very different watches and do not see one as the replacement for the other.

The only real consideration (I have both the 114060 and the 214270) is the weight (Exp is significantly lighter) and comfort (the explorer is more comfortable). The sub is superb, but the one thing that irks me to no end on my sub relative to my exp is the crown on the sub is big and sharp and grating (i've tried all different sizings). Wearing the 114060 irritates the skin on the top of my hand where the crown digs in, the exp is much. much less irritating (not really at all). I've had so many differnt types of watches (Pams, Omegas, Breitlings, 14060M) and the 114060 is the most irritating for me (as of now, just got it, maybe my skin will toughen up). I never had a noticeable discomfort from a crown.

All that said, if the proverbial gun to the head, i'd take the sub over the Exp.

I did. Loved the Explorer, and in a collection with a Sub date it would be my perfect 1 2 punch. However if only one, I get 1000% more enjoyment with the Sub. I traded up and never looked back.

My first Rolex was a black 16570. I sold it and acquired a Sub 16610. Would never go back. The bezel on the sub catches light and just looks awesome unlike the Exp II. Also, the Sub wears bigger as the dial and bezel are the same color and appears to cover more area.

I'll get a sub and keep my EXP2. No concerns there, they aren't even kind of the same and there's no overlap.

If I had the original explorer I'd probably just sell it and go for the sub. With no GMT feature and a black dial, I'd get a better watch in the sub anyway.

Go for both

I started out with my Submariner and add a Explorer later on, both are for keeps,

I think the Explorer 1 is a classic Rolex that can be worn anywhere and you should keep it and get a Sub too

Exactly what kind of attention was the watch getting? I wear a Sub ND daily and haven’t gotten one comment.

I saw someone in a large daily meeting that I am always in attendance at work. A guy was wearing a sub no date. It was the first time I noticed. No one is really looking unless they are interested in watches.

No, can't agree with that.

Explorers are great but you also can't go wrong with a Sub. I can't imagine you having any regrets.

Exactly same here. Exp nice to look at but Sub has more to catch the eye. Also, have a Sub date and use the date window regularly.

Back in 2016, I started with the 214270 Explorer and while I honestly love the watch (it really is fantastic) but I kept wanting a 114060. I ended up selling the 214270 and getting a 114060. The Sub is so versatile and can easily be your only watch. The Explorer could be your only watch as well but I think the Sub is a better option.

I would say try to get the Sub before selling the Explorer if you can swing it financially. They are different watches and you may not like the Sub as much as you think you will. This has happened to me several times. Now, when I buy a watch to replace something, I always keep the watch that is being replaced for at least a month before I sell it.

Totally different watches. Totally different vibes. Keep/get both if money and circumstance allow.

I would be hesitant to do so. It sounds like you really enjoy the Explorer so I think adding a Sub Date would be your best bet.
