Purchasing a preowned Sub 16610

Considering purchasing this Submariner. Reached out via eBay to seller who’s ‘98 sub was up for auction asking if he was the original owner. He replied stating he was the second owner and purchased it in 2012. He also had an AP for sale on eBay which seemed legit and had many bids. He said he did not have many references and they were all friends of his, but there was no risk to me as the buyer because via PayPal, I would have the chance to bring the watch to an AD before the funds transferred anyway.

I had been outbid on the watch on eBay and considered it a lost cause. He reached back out asking if I was interested still because the winner of the bid couldn’t put up the funds and he was just looking to get rid of it because he had a new 2019 sub as his dealer just called him from the waitlist. Can anybody help me verify this?

You need to be very careful. Lots of fakes out there.

Pass on this watch. Pointy crown guards are over polished. PLENTY of 16610’s out there- be picky and be patient.

Thanks guys. I did pass on it. Instead pulled the trigger on an Air King 14000 which is on its way. I took advice from some other forums and “bought the buyer” on this one.

Guys,

Is the best place to buy 5 digits in Japan? I heard their NOS stock and 5 digit models are mostly prestine condition and the best you will find anywhere?

I've never been so asking for real life experiences.

Absolutely agree. Way over polished. As noted: be patient, buy the seller first, and if all checks out focus on the condition of the watch.
