Rolex acknowledges the nicknames we have given to their watches.

If you go to the official Rolex website, hit the search button and then type a current model nickname like Hulk or Batman or Smurf or Pepsi etc you will get the correct watch in the search result. I put Kermit and got all the submariner lineup. It makes sense since it is not a current model but it is a submariner.

Kinda old news and someone with way more knowledge then me about the subject explained it way better than me on why this happened.

Basically he stated it wasn't necessarily Rolex acknowledging the nicknames, but search engine data making the correlation that when people search the nickname they're looking for said watch. Like an autofill of sorts.

Hopefully someone explains that better than me.

Yes they are called meta-tags and they are all over the net. Has nothing to do with a specific website

Are you a Rolex collector?

John,

Type in the word "sh*t" (replacing the * with the letter "i")

And then please report back as to how much "sense" it makes

I searched it. It's literally every Rolex. Then I went one step further and searched Archie's favorite word: "sh*tter" (once again replace the * with i) and it shows all the diamond paved dial Rolex watches. This is hilarious. The plot thickens.

Incorrect. When searching in google etc, that would be the case however in this instance it’s happneing on the internal search results on the actual Rolex website, which is powered by Rolex themselves... so the op is correct they have deliberately put some effort into marrying up those search terms with their own results.

Precisely right.

I’m in marketing for a large enterprise. Marketing is the group that works together with IT to manage the corporate website search functionality.

Search engine results (Google, Bing) are one thing, this is something different. www.rolex.com is completely under the control of Rolex.

They have embraced the nicknames and are perpetuating them. They do it because it’s a good user experience, in their opinion. It makes it easy for the layperson to find what they are looking for on the website. We can fuss and moan and suggest folks not use nicknames (I generally try not to use them), but it’s a loosing battle.

Big thanks to all the web developers out there who make our lives better! Someone is making things work properly on this very forum, and I thank you!

My circle of friends and I are spamming Google and Rolex website search with batgirl when we have 30 seconds to spare. Our mission is for it to stick as a permanent nickname on Rolex search engine.

Well I'm not one to make it up an AD told me, they get test shopped by Rolex too.

Next time your in your AD just ask them if Rolex has asked the staff to refrain from using the nicknames?

All the staff in both my local ADs all the use the nicknames - even when the customer doesn't. Plenty of others do too from countless threads on here. And in this thread people are confirming that the Rolex official website recognises them and that this can only come from Rolex themselves as they have control over their website - no Google metatags.
Rolex don't give a monkeys about the nicknames. Only a handful of curmudgeons on here do.

I understand. You are correct. No I did not use the TRF to see if it has been posted already. I don’t feel the need to do so because if the subject is lame or repetitive then most likely would not attract any traffic.
Maybe is for the people that missed the posts ( like myself ) when they were posted months ago.
It’s simple. If you are interested then you click to view. If you are not then you click and post angry derogatory comments. ( not you )
Everyone gets entertained.

Tony the enforcer and Carmine the fish disagrees with you.
They want to know where you are to have a talk with you.
Nicknames are fan and playful. Childish is to post demeaning comments about people you don’t know.
