AP vs Daytona Gold

Greetings All! Here’s a “what would you rather” question.

For my dad, 62, is he better off with the current 41mm AP Stainless Steel Chrono Blue or Black dial, or the current Daytona in Yellow Gold with maybe Black dial?

Retired, golf a lot, etc

Thanks for your opinions!

I agree, also do he need/want a chrono? Not sure what is "better off" for him?

Well, I'd go Daytona with blk dial. Nice contrast and tougher than the AP in my opinion.

Actually the 116518LN. The deployant buckle and lighter wear is nice for an active golfing lifestyle.

I agree with this.

Unless you're also picking the watch that'll one day come to you...

Legibility and date function is important in later life. Doctors appt's and when's Price is Right etc...

If those two are the only choice, I would pick AP any day.

Gold is heavy and soft for a golfers daily, imo. But the AP in steel will also scratch. The oysterflex will help with weight, But there's a lot going on in a round of golf to ding your nice gold Rolex.

I agree with the legibility and date comments also.

I don't golf with my gold Daytona, I DO golf with my steel Exp II as a rule.
Note: I don't own an AP, but I do have a nautilus, and man does it scratch easy.

The Rolex Daytona and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chrono are quite different, also in size.
Your father should have a preference for one of the above.
Anyway both are great chronos. Can not make bad choice IMHO.

If he wears it while he golfs, the Daytona might be annoyingly heavy (or maybe it won't). If he doesn't, I pick the Daytona.

This. They wear very differently. The ROC looks huge compared side-by-side with the Daytona.

Which one fits him better, which one sings louder? I never golf in either my AP or my Gold Daytona and honestly, prefer my AP. Just my 2 cents!

Have you golfed with an AP before?

Good luck

AP's reliability and accuracy is questionable in my experience, especially after 18 holes...

If he wants to golf with a watch on it should never be the AP.

I like the idea of a gold Daytona for a 62 year old.

P.S. I'm 62 on my next birthday.

This was my first thought. APs are probably not suited for jarring impacts, so I’ve heard. I treat my AP as a sporty-looking dress watch.

Even is he does not golf with it - Rolex any day. I had an AP RO, bought brand new and had issues. I would be hard pressed to call it a sports watch even thought is was supposed to be. Rolex's are tanks that you can wear any where and do anything with and still exudes class.

Ap is not a real sports watch...ap are very fragile and should not be folded in....if you do you soon realize they are not cheap to service either

Would you consider anything else besides what you mentioned? If given those choices, I'd go with the Daytona but the weight of PM might be noticeable on the golf course and maybe legibility issues.

Well, you shouldn't really play golf with any watch on... but I'd pick a Daytona - a true classic.

Audemars Piguet literally has a entire page dedicated to their golf ambassadors who wear AP watches while golfing all the time. Also tennis ambassadors who have worn the watches in matches.

https://www.audemarspiguet.com/en/ex...f-ambassadors/

Now Rolex's are tanks that's for sure and perfectly safe to wear for golfing. I hardly think AP would be advertising their watches on the wrists of golf and tennis athletes during matches if they were having reliability and quality issues while doing so.

Either will work and both are great. It will boil down to personal preference in the end.

I watch golf all the time, never have I seen a male with an AP logo on their shirt wearing an AP while golfing.....I know Serena wears one while playing tennis and I can be sure that it’s been tweaked a time or two....there are lots of posts where AP owners have had their royal oaks need service in the first 2-4 weeks of wear with no sport activities being done....
