An interesting little curio I came across in the Sydney Morning Herald....

TIME IS MONEY

The second-most expensive watch ever sold at a London auction fetched an extraordinary £347,200 ($A863,000) at Bonham's last month. And it wasn't even antique. The Patek Philippe 3974 wristwatch was made in 1994, a rare platinum automatic self-winding watch with a perpetual calendar and moon phase. Its 28mm diameter case contains 467 parts including a micro-motor. The successful bid was placed by an anonymous European buyer

(Not knowing my PP's, not sure if that's the right watch, but it's the one they showed)

So this left me wondering....what's the most expensive watch sold?
I found this:

"A 1933 gold Patek Phillipe with 24 complications.

The watch had been the final chapter in a game of elite one-upsmanship played out through the 1920s between New York financier Henry Graves Jr. and automotive innovator James Packard. Each successively commissioned more than a dozen timepieces, each better than the other's until Graves commissioned the ultimate watch feasible at that time, a watch that took three years to design and five years to produce.

According to Forbes magazine, "When completed in 1933, the watch had a different horological function for each hour of the day and included a chart of the nighttime sky over Graves' home in New York."

The watch sold at auction by Sothebys in 1999 for US $11,003,500."

..........and yet I wouldn't pay a cent over $600,000 AUD for that watch.Some people just have too much money.

But just think of the number of Rolex watches you could get with that kind of dough? Makes sense?

Some of Eric Claptons watches hold the highest for a Rolex watch.Think the highest paid for a single Rolex watch. Was a 1952 stainless steel Oyster Chronograph, known by collectors as the Killy Watch, named for French skier Jean-Claude Killy $197000.Myself not a huge fan of Patek Phillipe,today IMO there are a few brands now can equal,and better. But like most things today have not quite got the image of Patek.But saying that, if I had the money Patek would not be on top of my buy list.

Must agree with you there Padi, as nice as a PP is, they just don't do it for me either. I just feel more comfortable with a big chunk of SS sitting atop my wrist. That being said, however, the history and character of PP as a brand is pretty much unquestionable, just like you said.

And JJ......i'd hazard it'd be at least 100!

But of course, imagine the discount you'd be able to wrangle out of the AD. "Excuse me....do you ship in bulk?"

Wow! at 28mm that thing is rather small for me. I guess I will pass and buy a couple of homes instead.
