DJ/Speedy deal
Not sure who but fellow TRFers would be able to understand and opine on this but I found a 5-digit Datejust circa 1995, SS with white gold fluted bezel on jubilee in excellent condition but no box and papers for $5450. To my mind this is a little steep but it’s a seller whose reputation is solid and the bracelet is pretty tight and it’s a really nice piece overall.
I decided to offer my six-month-old Speedy Pro as trade-in. It’s on croc and not a bracelet but otherwise the croc strap has been worn twice and it’s a full set in excellent condition. Am I missing something to not understand how we went from a discussion of me paying $3k out of pocket to $4k once the counterparts realized the Speedy isn’t on bracelet? The idea of $1450 of value (accepting their $5450 value on the DJ) on the Speedy seems quite low. I have very limited experience trading in and I know I’m going to take a hit but this seems crazy. Was trying to avoid the hassle of a private sale so no need to point out that I can always go that route (well aware). And definitely not trying to complain about anything, just trying to understand it better or see if I’m somehow being unreasonable in my expectations (my thought was Speedy plus $3k max). I would not do that trade OP. I would keep the Speedmaster all day. I would guess DJs are a lot easier to move than a Speedmaster (especially one on a leather strap).

$5450 for a 95 datejust with no box or papers is insanity... i dont care how good the condition is. Older datejusts are plentiful, not rare, and not worth close to that premium. And yes you are getting ripped off on trade in, take a hard pass.

Thank you everyone. I definitely walked away from it 99% certain that it wasn’t just a bad offer but a terrible one but I also like to know I’m not missing anything.
