1998 Datejust
Hi all,
I am looking to buy a 1998 Rolex Datejust, Stainless Steel with Champagne dial 36mm Automatic watch and gold and stainless jubilee band. It also has princess cut diamonds for all of the numbers. The jewelry store that I found it at is an extremely reputable store and they are asking $5250. I also found the same watch at another store near me but from 1988 and they are asking $7250. Both are in prefect condition, the 1998 still has the green sticker on the back. Obviously I want to go with the 1998 but I am wondering if anyone can give me any feedback or advise on why you think one is priced higher than the other and if you think either of these watches are priced correctly and/or what you would offer the store? I currently have a 2016 GMT Master Series II stainless that was bought for me as a 30th birthday gift and would like a vintage Rolex to add to my collection. Thanks! |

I think that both those prices are high for 20 and 30 year old Datejusts.

They seem pretty aggressively priced, especially for that 1988. I've been researching and hunting for a DJ for a while and I've seen decent examples, not mint, anywhere from $2600-$4400 (for some of the harder to find variants, in good shape). Can't say what effect the diamonds have for the dial as far as price, but for a TT DJ, I've seen plenty made in the 1980s, in good condition, priced in the $3-$4k range. If you're willing to shop around and find the bezel/dial/bracelet combo you want, online, you can beat your local prices.

1998 Datejust
I agree with Larry. Even taking into account the diamond dial (presuming it is original).
Also, square cut diamonds (princess cut is a square) aren’t usually on original DJ dials. They are round diamonds. Does the one you’re looking at resemble this? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

That's is exactly what it looks like, I guess the setting it was in was throwing me off. For the 1998 priced at $5250 what would you say is a fair price for it since it would be coming from a Jewelry Store in Boca Raton, FL?

Agree the prices seem high to me. Also, be VERY careful of diamond dials in these. If I had to make a guess I would say that more than half on the market are NOT original Rolex.

Too much $$. I’ve bought many of these from trusted sellers here. Go that route. Forget the jeweler down the street. Go with someone here’s who’s sold scores of these.

Seems too high OP. I wouldn’t even pay that for same year Submariner, and those are going for much higher.

Most likely aftermarket dial and jeweler has no idea whether is factory dial or not.
