Flooded GMT Master II
OK so my Coke GMT Master II got some water in it because I didn't realize the crown wasn't down fully then went in a jacuzzi. despite various attempts it couldn't be dried out without some damage. Current quote from RSC Australia is $6.5k (AUS) for a face, movement and hands plus a polish and a further $2k recommend for a new bracelet due to wear.
Am curious on opinions, ideas from you more experienced guys for cheaper options or just bale out and sell it as is (not sure what it may be worth as is). I travel through Hong Kong regular but not sure if they would be cheaper, anyone used there RSC. I love Rolex but not sure I want to stress about showering or swimming to the tune of $6-7k a pop. |

wow that is pricey, I drowned my 16750 in 1999, had to have the guts replaced and the dial. It cost $1,000 US at the time.

well, it isn’t hard to make sure your crown is locked down before taking a shower or swimming. i do that on a daily basis. so the watch alone shouldn’t cause you that stress.
in this case, there are no inexpensive options. you’ll lose your wig selling a flooded watch that needs that amount of work. or you’ll spend a gob of money to have her repaired. for me... get her repaired. and check your crowns!

A few years ago when I used the HK RSC regularly, it was about half the cost of most countries (Aus, USA, UK included), but not sure if that's still the case. You'll need the original papers, otherwise it takes them about two weeks to clear the serial number with the Geneva mothership.

It would be interesting to hear from one of our watch experts on cause and potential costs but that sounds high.
I was under the impression that the watch is still water proof when the crown if unscrewed ... or is that just the trip-lock divers? Regardless, maybe Bas will see will see this and advise. Good luck |

That’s high. I would go to an independent. For example the folks that service my watch are a Rolex AD, and the service person trained by Rolex, so everything is handled in house. A full service after 17 years without service was $790 I think. I mean is a new dial necessary or can be dried. The new bracelet is a separate issue. I’m no watch maker but for the life of me, I don’t know why the watch can’t be disassembled and dried out. Then lubricated and put together.

What was the time period between soaking and discovery of water in the movement?
Corrosion starts very quickly in anything but pure non-salt H2O. My sister's dj28 got a load of pool water in it that she did not notice for some time. Total loss. I think she got $300 for the mess. Sell it for what you can, and buy a Casio Duro. No more stress. |

I’d probably get it fixed to keep. It would be like new and it’s hard to replace a watch you have a lot of wear time with. I’d rather do that than try to replace it.

Yes in my very limited knowledge sounds high. I would see if there are any good indies in your area that you could send it to for evaluation. Also as far as the bracelet I've read only good things about Michael Young bringing bracelets back to life if it needs it.

I'd find a local expert watchmaker who works on Rolex. Rolex is not hard to work on, you will get better service and a much cheaper price. Oh and keep the bracelet, I'm sure they would LOVE to sell you a new one, thats silly. |

I think there's something else amiss.
Even unscrewed, there's still a low WP and good WR level. A high temp wet sauna or steam bath is actually worse than 30min in a tub, imop. |

Yikes, sorry to hear. This is my worst fear and part of the reason I have all my watches insured.

A general service costs about 700$ I think. And they may replace any part in the case. Things like the dial crystal crown etc are extra. So i dont see how this can be soo expensive

It is because he will be getting what pretty much amounts to a brand new watch, and all for 8.5k Australian $. Seems like a great deal, considering how much a dealer is charging for a new one.

That seems very high to me, however, if you want to look at it this way: He will be getting basically a “new” Coke for that price, wouldn’t that kind of make it worth it?

I'd have thought an badly screwed modern Rolex would still be able to withstand the relatively benign environment of a jacuzzi.

It also is a guess that the leak was through the crown.... many leaks are through degraded crystal seals.

I had a Breitling leak...basically needed a new movement/dial/hands (pretty much all internals) etc. Cost was about $1000 as it was a 2824. With the Rolex, just the movement is probably $3000+ by itself.
