Buying my dream Datejust

I have recently added a 3rd Rolex to my collection, and this is the prettiest one out of the bunch. So, I have always been a fan of Rolex's hidden clasp on the 36mm Datejust and was heartbroken when they switched over to the newer clasp. My all time favourite configuration of the Dj has always been the ttDj36 with the white dial and roman numerals (with the hidden clasp of course). I guess I always saw the watch as a "i'll own it some day" watch, and was caught up in the hype of Rolex's sports models at that point in time. I wasn't able to find this exact watch for sale anywhere online so I figured that it was very unlikely that I would ever own it, especially not from new. I also assumed that ADs had sold all the Datejusts with the hidden clasp since some time has passed since the release of the latest Datejust 36.

Now rewind to exactly 10 days ago (Oct 14), I walked into my AD, who I am no stranger to at all, interested in looking at the current 36mm Datejust lineup. With a table full of new Datejusts he was showing me in between us, I started telling him about my all time favourite configuration of the DJ. I explained to him how big of a shame it was that Rolex has done away with the hidden clasp in favour of the sportier one, even if it offers a more comfortable fit and easylink. I did this not because I was hoping they would have it in stock, but because my AD is actually a pretty cool guy and really passionate about watches.

He told me to wait right there, and that he has a piece that I might be interested in. He got up to get the watch he was referring to, leaving me alone in my seat to guess what watch he would bring out. I figured that it would be some kind of a sports watch in two tone, because he had previously offered me a Bluesy two weeks prior to this and a tt Daytona 8 months back.

So he came back with two different watches and a big smile on his face. Both of the, were white dial tt36mm Datejusts. Both of them had a fluted bezel, and most importantly, both were on a jubilee bracelet.... with the hidden clasp. The only difference between them was the indices, as one had the romans and the other had the sticks. He sat down and said: "both of these are new, never been owned".

I honestly couldn't believe what was happening and with a huge smile on my face and butterflies in my stomach, I pointed to at Dj with the roman indices and said "ill take that one".

I've had it for 10 days so far, and am falling in love with more and more with every passing moment that is spent with it on my wrist. The unobtrusive hidden clasp, characterised by a small Rolex crown, gives the bracelet a seamless appearance that makes it look more like an exquisite piece of jewellery than a watch. The uninterrupted Jubilee bracelet makes the watch feel extremely comfortable on the wrist and gives off a textured depth to it the Oyster bracelet simply does not possess. Light jovially dances around the fluted bezel with every slight movement that my left hand makes, and the gold centre links come to life and almost look like the embers of a fire depending on the lighting you catch it in.

The white dial may seem out of place on such a "loud" watch at first, but it actually serves as the perfect backdrop to the beautifully contrasting golden roman numerals that are sat on top of it. In other words, the understated white lacquered dial allows for the lustrous romans to take centre stage, resulting in a configuration that simply oozes timeless elegance.

Being two tone, the watch does not seek to potentially offend anyone in the same way a full gold watch might, however it aims to be more playful in its demeanour than it's steel alternative. The gold accents add a much welcomed femininity to the overall appearance of the watch, which makes every second of wearing it feel like an occasion. The 36mm case size further adds to this aura of femininity because of how small and dainty it is on my 7.3 inch wrist.

I really didn’t intend for this post to be a love letter to my newly acquired Datejust at first but i guess it turned out that way anyway. I also didn’t set out to make this post this long, so apologies for that. Anyway, the watch turned out to be a great addition to my current line up and I’m really glad I picked it up close to my 21st birthday. Gorgeous watch! Congrats.

I just got a TT 41 but really want a 36 again. Even after the 41 redesign I still think the 36 is king!! And always will be.

I agree with you 100%!! Always loved the jubilee and hidden clasp. I have the SS version
and is my daily watch to wear. I also have your watch with the Romans but with the oyster band. I’ve been thinking about buying the TT jubilee bracelet with the hidden clasp so I can go back and forth with other bands.

Another fan of the hidden clasp. My first Rolex was a 36mm TT DJ and it will always have a place in my heart. I also love the ‘Romans’ on white’ configuration.
