Depends on the seller. You buy the seller. With a trusted seller the watch will be authentic.

Not to mention, would you expect Rolex to say anything different? Of course they want you & everyone else going to ADs to purchase their watches.

I think this is probably true. If most buyers are practicing buying from a trusted seller then prices will all be higher, due to the expense of maintaining any business even if it's all online sales. Listing on C24 cost money to a vendor, and C24 may take commissions if you aren't paying monthly fees. Insured shipping is very expensive. If they take paypal or credit cards more cost involved.

I always tried to buy private , talk about the history of the piece, any service , look at original purchase receipt, and negotiate lower price as well.

Given this state of affairs it might be prudent to insist on a recent service by RSC with correct documentation, serial numbers, etc., before buying used.

Wouldn't expect much else from Rolex. A little fear mongering to keep people coming to them.

At the same time they're not wrong. It's getting easier by the day to reproduce parts at higher qualities with modern production techniques. The gap between fake and real is closing everyday.

Selling a watch on Chrono24 is not as expensive and people think.

https://www.chrono24.com/magazine/wh...-p_32622/#gref

"Selling your watch on Chrono24 comes with comparably low fees: They’re always a single-digit percentage of the sales price in the form of either a listing fee or a commission fee – you never have to pay both. Which you pay depends on where you’re selling watches from. Regardless, all fees are limited to a maximum of $299.00. The commission fee is only due after you’ve sold your watch. Chrono24 retains this fee directly at the time of payout to the seller, saving you from any difficult calculations or invoices. This both expedites the process and allows you as a seller to relax."

Trusted sellers wouldn’t ever carry bad examples especially DSW.

That isn't what the "Gray Market" is. Grey Market is not used, or resellers, it is a parallel import stream that bypasses the distributor. They are always real and legitimate, just not warrantied.

Counterfeits/fakes are Black Market, illegal.

Exactly, also Fake watch, Fake person. Never understood wearing a fake, much less spending the 100s to have some POS from China... makes zero sense.

Lots of folks here say buy the seller. Well plenty of so called trusted sellers have mountains of almost unworn couple year old gmt, sub, and Daytona’s. Most don’t say the have been polished, but let’s face it they have been polished. I also wonder about stickers. Even with many trusted sellers, I have my doubts if it’s 100% honesty there.

Not really anymore. The new fakes are near perfect and even the movements are nearly identical. Unless the seller opens the watch and is a highly skilled watchmaker and intimately familiar with Rolex finishing, the seller can be fooled. The only way to avoid fakes is to buy from an AD. They now even do the etching on the crystal. Disassembly and component analysis and assay is a good method to discover fakes. Fakes also weigh exactly what a real watch weighs to the gram. Easier to just buy new from an AD, rather than pay the premium and get a fake.

The good news is if you do buy a fake from a known reputable business they will stand good on the deal and refund your money whenever the fake is discovered.
