RSC polish not so satisfying

Just got my GMT back from RSC UK after full service and polishing. Can't fault the quality of the brushed and polished surface finishing but I'm a bit disappointed that the case edges are a bit soft.

I forgot to take pics before the service but I remember the edges were much sharper. What do you guys think?

Watch looks in perfect condition, but yes, the edges are softer now.

This has been discussed so many times here. Judging by your time on the site, did you not read any of these posts?

Looks good to me. If they are indeed softer, imho looks better especially with the wide lugs and no bevel. Without a bevel, making it a bit softer eases the transition of the angle.

Looks good! You can always have it touched up by a qualified independent if it bothers you. Had the same thing happen with my Explorer II when it got back from service a few months ago. Just not as sharp as it originally was - if it bothers me which it doesn't at this point I'll send it to LA Watch Works or what not.

Polishing gently to preserve shape and angles often does not remove all scratches and dents.

Polishing hard to remove all scratches and dents will soften edges.

RSC aim to meet in the middle of both scenarios. Perfect/like new is not the goal.

Looks good though. Enjoy your beautiful watch.

Did you give the RSC instructions not to polish your watch?

Have to agree Scot and if it was my watch I would be perfectly happy, a fantastic polish job.

No because I wanted it polished, it was covered in micro scratches accumulated over 9 years.

I think it looks great! I had a 2011 one that was definitely softened after polish but that’s the trade for what you have which is a super fresh watch! Win win

The edges may be softer but that polish job looks pretty darn good to my eyes. Good work.

Do Not Polish might be your starter for ten. My ExpII is at the Kent RSC at the mo for a service and under express orders Not To Polish. We'll see when it comes back what they've taken that to mean.

I remember once asking for a vegetarian meal in Morocco and being given just a little less lamb than my colleagues. Let's hope it's not in that vein.

Think it’s a good job. It’s always going to take some metal off unfortunately.

Like new SHOULD be the goal, even if it's not achieved. As we all know the watches are not perfect even when new. I will likely send my YG Sub to an independent here in the US just for this reason. If they polish SS with a heavy hand, I would not want to see how they polish 18K gold.

Ruined. Look at the crazy stripes they left on the side of the case.

Nine years on that piece is a lot of wear esp if you daily. Perhaps your expectations were out of line? I think many people don’t realize that a polish can remove fractions of a millimeter of surface when performed properly. Overall the important thing to consider is the uniformity and condition when complete. From what I see the watch really looks lovely.

I have only heard great things about Rolliworks, that has had many clients that had their watches serviced at RSC, only to resend to Rolliworks to fix.

Now they are happy with sharp and well defined lugs, edges corners, sharp and straight light reflected PCL's.

I was very impressed with their, "Clean Room!" and Bank Size Vault, and Police presence

I disagree. You cannot remove 10 years worth of wear marks and produce a product that looks brand new. And any brand in any industry would be foolish to set a quality target that is unachievable from the outset.

As each customer’s watch will arrive with it’s own unique level and pattern of wear the desired result is described as ‘best possible’. That wording can be adapted to fit each scenario whereas you simply cannot promise every case/bracelet can be made to look ‘like new’.

Another important point is that a free of charge refinish cannot be compared to a chargeable case or bracelet restoration by a specialist which often includes adding metal back on via laser welding. That’s comparing apples to oranges.

Also, those photos do not show a heavy handed job imo.

Not sure why RSC is rounding edges these days - there's no particular need to do it and according to Mike at Rolliworks it actually takes a fair degree of skill. You can have this fixed by a specialist if it bothers you. In US it would be Rolliworks or LAWW, not sure in the UK.

Maybe the brush work should go further to the edge when compared to original, but this is a great reference to own, and I would be happy with this especially since you have enjoyed it for so many years.

But isn't the polish extra money, in which case they'd solicit you for it first?

No it’s free as part of the service. It’s generally treated as opt out rather than opt in.

A refinish is included in the movement service price at an RSC. The issue is when you specifically tell them do not polish/refinish your watch for whatever reason and they take it upon themselves to ignore your request and refinish it anyway. The customer's request should always be honored, and it has been seen time after time again on this forum that some RSC's simply don't.

People expect a brand new watch after polishing... Forums like this and social media has made the polishing police a little too aggressive.

I think it looks fine btw.
