To the guy who outbid me on eBay...

I don't know you but I already don't like you. Congrats on the new gilt 1018.

Was that the black dial one sold from France? IT WAS NOT ME (truly), I was just looking at what I think is the one you missed on.

Are you accusing someone on TRF?

If so, how do you know it was someone here??
If not - um...ok? people get outbid all the time.

That’s the one. The symmetry, lume and hour markers were just perfect.

Not angry at all, just venting with a little sarcasm is all. I agree, People get outbid all the time and I just didn’t have the highest bid. Oh well.

I'm sure OP is talking in rethorical manner ;)
Anyway OP:
yes getting outbid hurts,
but in the end, if you got outbid... you didn't bid above your comfort level,
and it wasn't meant to be. I know it's hard, and it has happened to me too, but
... TRY and let it go ;)

Pretty sure it was meant to be tongue in cheek. Like such: The idiom tongue-in-cheek refers to a humorous or sarcastic statement expressed in a mock serious manner. Wikipedia.

And Wikipedia actually has it right.

I believe the OP's second comment was sincere.

My bad - I'm usually good at reading sarcasm, but not today I guess!

Sorry you missed out on the watch, and I hope you find another in the same price range.

You may be better off "losing." I've bought a number of vintage pocket watches on Ebay happily in the $50-$300 range, but my couple of forays in higher end wrist watches have not ended well. I've stuck with AD's or DavidSW otherwise.

Whereas I paid less on eBay for a 1012, two 1013s, a 1018, a 6424 and a 1675 than I would have from any of the dealers. I got a bad deal on my 1016 but only a couple of hundred bucks over the odds; the others, I took chances. It's my version of "dog rescue", but all the deals worked out very well for me in the long run. EBay is an awful company, sure, but there are deals to be had there.

My recent gilt-dial 1018 from eBay actually worked out quite well - minor water damage on the dial produced a charming weathered appearance which often matches my personal esthetic; the case cleaned up well and the movement turned out to be OK after some minor work by my watchmaker. Strangely I cannot find the listing, but given the discussion about "running condition" between me and the seller perhaps he yanked it!

OP, it was quite a cracker, but you should be able to (with time and leg work) find another in that shape, which was excellent. The person you 'lost' to paid a VERY handsome price, so at least you can spurlge on something else and not feel bad.

This price does seem quite high.

In Economics, there is a term called “the winner’s curse” for Auctions. “The Winner’s Curse” means that when you win an auction, you have just agreed to pay more for for an object than anybody else in the auction thinks it is worth. When I bid on eBay, I try to determine in advance what price it could go for that I would not mind losing it. I bid just under that.

absolutely, wise words, years ago on ebay I have seen bidders on ebay placing $999,999 bids thinking the MAX BID automation will place them in the winner circle on a $1000 item , only to realise the next guy also had placed a ' fake' $10,000 max bid to be assured to be the winner....
bidder number 1 then won a $1000 item with a $10,100 bid lol

I'd hardly say "everyone". I think it was, maybe, one or two guys that didn't detect the sarcasm.

Jeez.

(I'm kidding!!)
