Sub LV Getting more RARE? (un-scientific research)
Howdy folks,
I've just been noticing how the offers for sale of Sub LV's on TRF are getting far and few between, and prices seem to be climbing... I remember six months ago, you'd find an LV on offer on each page of TRF classifieds, and now, my "research" has shown that in the last 24 days, only two LV's were on offer... one on 2/18 offered for $5,700 US and one on 3/8, offered for $5,250 US... What do you think? LV's getting more rare? People just not selling them? Rolex making (or shipping) less of them? Also - what's the latest scuttlebutt you've heard about the LV? |

Interesting I've notice this too and not just in the sales section on this site but also in the pre-owned listings of dealers here in the UK. There have been rumours that they will be discontinued this year in preparation for the new SS sub in 2010 but nothing more than rumours. The recent price rise in the UK (~8%) has also helped the prices increase, however, the only pre-owned ones that seem to come available are M-series.

at all my ADs here in socal they have the Sub LV in cases and at least 1-2 pieces in the back. I would say they are pretty common here. The GMT II C in stainless is still MIA.

I have seen them at half of the 6 AD's I have been to in the past couple of months. M series seem to command the highest. I have seen earlier letter's for $4,200-4,000 pre-owned.

I picked up a brand new "M" series right out of an AD's showcase this week with a 22% discount off list. I had it shipped to an address I have out of state to save the sales tax and picked it yesterday. I was going to go with TempoKing, but the AD beat him by $100. They are getting hungry with their cases full.

If I saw one for that type of a price I'd buy a second one in a heartbeat. I think the LV will be a "golden ticket" watch in a few years... Even if you go to "preownedrolex" there are none on the site, and there are only two at "Bernardwatch" (at Bernard, he used to have six or eight several months ago). I think collectors are drawing down the supply. In a year, anyone who has an LV will be a happy dude...

not sure, the only ADs that have them are Ben Bridge, im thinking because BB never discounts or gives no payment plans whatsoever. Every where else they are sold out, the tt and all gold GMTs are everywhere though.

Yes, just went to see it. And it's an old F-serial, with old style box, so maybe that contributes to the $4,200 price. Also, the hologram looks a bit weird.
If it's all good to go, for a five year old watch, probably the right price. If I were the owner, I'd keep it for five years and sell it for $10,000... |

Evey AD I go to has a few of them and if you look on other watch forums sales corners you can find them for $4500 or less, some like new for $4200. I recently saw a M serial sell for the mid $4's. Prices are not rising that is for sure, prices are dropping on every model right now.

I think if I was going to buy another LV, I would track down one that was produced in 2003 (can't remember the serial off the top of my head). While I realize the serial numbers really don't mean anything & probably will mean little to nothing with regard to value, I think it would be kind of cool to have the 'original' LV that came out to signify 50 years of Subs.

More dumb questions...... but without them what's the point of all you experts - does the LV have a different Model Number between the lugs or is the only difference the dial/insert?? Like Louis says a Y or F Serial is the actual 50th.

You know I have no idea if the LV will go away. I love mine, I bought one and sold it. I said to myself what the hell did you just do? Several months later I bought another one with the chapter band. I love the LV with the chapter band the most. I hope the LV doe not go away for a long time.

I have never been a fan of the green bezel insert. I hate to break it to you but no modern Rolex will ever be rare.

The LV is less in demand than other Rolexes! Nice watch but not everybody who love the green bezel. I personnaly find the green bezel awsome...

Thanks to all who responded!
I still think the LV is going to be a rare watch in a few years. I understand that many AD's have it on hand in the USA, but this is not the case all over the world. Beyond that, the watch's overall numbers and production years (if it gets discontinued) just mean that not too many LV's will be in the market in the years to come. Mark my words - LV owners will be able to tack on $1,000 to the price of the watch the very moment Rolex announces that it is discontinued (this year?). Then, within a few years (I don't know how many, but let's say 5 - 10), the price will go up and up. It's just a really simple matter of supply and demand. There are many thousands and thousands of Rolex collectors all over the world, and few watches. Beyond that, demand for this watch was "built in" with its hype and rarity (yes, it's still rare, despite what some may say). Good luck to all of us who have an greenie! |

There are also many thousands and thousands of LV's out there, I think it's crazy to think of them as a solid investment piece.

I was thinking the same thing. Yep, maybe thousands & thousands of collectors but can you say HUNDREDS of thousands & thousands watches produced. The LV may have a slight advantage in terms of price on resell down the line, but I don't think it will be a very big advantage. If it was a much, much greater limited production #'s, then the story might be different. But in the big scheme of things, they produced too many of them IMO for it to bring in any type of outrageous premium over a standard Sub.
