Inspired- some pics

Well I have been inspired by some of the excellent photography work on this site. I had some fun this morning but my wife is convinced that I have finally lost it

Lighting seems to be my biggest challenge.

Thoughts or tips most welcome.

Hi Charlie,

Great collection, but you're right......lighting in those pics seems to be the biggest problem.

First off, DON'T use the flash. Secondly, place camera into MACRO mode which will be indicated by the yellow lotus flower on your LCD screen.

In MACRO mode, you would need to place the camera on a tripod or a solid surface so there is absolutely no shake.

Make sure there's no natural light from the back bouncing off the crystal - you will be able to gauge that on your camera LCD screen.

Give it a few shots and through trial and error you'd be surprised at what you can finally achieve.

Good luck - JJ

I have Leiica V-Lux 1 and the flash is built in.

Everything I have taken has been in auto mode.

I'm not happy with the camera and should have just bought SLR

Don't underestimate the quality of a Leica. Their lenses can produce some amazing pics.

Like I advised.....just turn OFF the flash and use MACRO mode.....and your results will be amazing.

Here are a few of my pics taken with the above settings using a PANASONIC Lumix digital camera fitted with a LEICA lens....

JJ- those are stunning!

Approximately how close is your camera to the watches?

Good question, Charlie......it would depend on the camera.

In the above shots, I've maintained a distance of approx. 5 cms (around 2"), but some cameras let you go as close as 1 cm (less than ½").

After you've taken the pics, a lot also depends on how you "fix" the pics with the software on your computer.

The main thing is to "CROP" the picture so that the focus is on the entire watch rather than having a lot of irrelevant surrounding stuff making the watch look small and insignificant (as evidenced in your very first pic on the top).

Also use the BRIGHTNESS and CONTRAST ratios which can enhance the quality of the image.

Good luck - JJ

Try using NATURAL light, Charlie. It's obvious you've got some overhead lighting on and that can be a bit of a nuisance.

Start with natural daylight photography - choose a place in the room where you don't have light bouncing off the window panes. I know it can be a bit of a bother, but with some practice and a bit of patience, you'll get there.

Regular partners in crime. I need to grab some better shots. New camera since that old pic.
This is my speed more often than not though.
Salute!

If you like, I can come over and help you out with your photography as long as you provide the cognac and cigars. Cohiba are my favourites, by the way.
