Opinion on New Sub

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I am a new to watch game and figure this is a good place to get some advice from the Rolex community. One colleague has offer to sell a new Stainless Submariner for
$11.500. Is that a deal to jump on? I know nobody can predict the market or know when Rolex will increase production.

It’s not a deal, but many are selling at that pricing lately.

If it's a green one it's a good price. The question is, by what amount are you prepared to pay over the retail price? The MSRP of a Sub Date can buy a lot of tasty alternatives. And a lot of very tasty used ones. They might not be Rolex watches, but at least you'll still have the shirt on your back. Each to our own. I paid over MSRP for a new Hulk. But I couldn't justify paying what sellers are now asking, even if they will haggle.

I second the bellow. But I would add to buy new, the wait is not too long. Personally I wold not buy a sub in late 2019 because in few months the sub will be updated with new movement. So I would either buy at MSRP now if I can’t wait or wait for the new model and buy it from an AD.

Short Answer... No

Long Answer... list price is $8550 and I just looked on Chrono24 and saw a few excellent condition used ones for sale around $9k. So I would definitely not call that “a deal to jump on.” (Even NIB ones on there are less than $11k and it seems like prices are headed down not up.). Seems to me like your colleague is trying to take advantage of you being “new to the watch game” and charge you $3k over list price.

Try Bobs Watches, you should be able to get one for less than that. What did your buddy pay?

Take a peak at a 216570 in black. You might like it and the prices are much more friendly.

Don't do it. You can get one from DavidSW for much less. It'll be older, but it's a sub, they're bulletproof!

We’ll see but I’d be surprised if the Sub getting the 3235 in 2020 is anything close to being a done deal.

No, you should tell him to go jump into the nearest lake. Get a brand new Submariner at an AD with all the correct papers for less than that. Subs are easy to get if you are ok with a little waiting.

Good luck with that!

Based on the current artificial shortage/high demand (whatever it is), the waiting time for a 2020 updated sub at your AD will be at least half a decade long!

I forget that waiting time varies from one country to another. waiting time in the Middle East for a sub or a steal GMT is no more than 2 to 3 months if a good relationship is present with the Rolex Boutique. Boutique not AD.

It’s all relative. US will be easier. Also purchase history can impact. My AD called to offer me an unsolicited LVc recently. Told them not right now I’d rather someone that really wants the watch to get it the “right way”.

Would not jump on the deal if it’s a standard date or no date model. Like others have said, however, if it’s an LV then it might not be the worst deal.

I would build a relationship with your AD and go that route. You will definitely be able to get one. Just be nice and persistent. And especially if it’s your first nice watch, you want to have the Rolex boutique experience.

Too much by about a thousand or so. New ones are available for less. Ignore the fluttering of hands above...your colleague doesn't suck, probably still is a friend, and that price range is also offered by a few trusted sellers here as well. You can get it for less. If you "buy the seller" you may pay a few bucks more for the peace of mind.

Whaaaaat? What are you comparing to?

If it's an LV, that's the deal of the year!

Very true!

For a first watch, I don’t know if I would go LV though

I wouldn't either. Sub C - date or non. Whichever deal comes first.

Uhh, hell no. Buy at an AD. They aren't that hard to acquire, just takes a little patience.
