Repetition in your collection
Hi Guys,
I’m new here, just started poking around and I’m really happy to have found a community of like minded enthusiasts! My question is for those who collect the same modes from one manufacturer (Rolex in my case) only with slight variations in their metals, bezels, dials, and movements. I recently purchased by 16th watch and I am finding that my collection naturally evolved to become repetitious. It’s not a bad thing, I actually think it makes it more of a true collection since I have to source the watches I want rather than just buying whatever catches my eye in an AD’s case. I am just curious if anyone else finds themselves in the same position, and if so, what criteria differentiates your collection? For example, I own a 14060 and a 114060. The same watch, but they couldn’t be more different! I also have a BLNR (oyster) and a BLRO, though there is quite a bit that separates these two models! Same story with Daytona’s... I have a SS 116520 White Dial, WG with a Silver Dial, and the Platinum all on oyster bracelets. Anyway you get the point. I am really curious to hear what criteria you guys stick to when buying a new piece, and what you try to look for in a piece when expanding your collection. And please, if you have nothing nice to say, don’t respond. This is an honest question from one enthusiast to other enthusiasts who share the same passion. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A collection should have a goal in mind. Nothing wrong with having a hundred of the same model if they tell a story for you.

I wouldn’t think it unusual for a Rolex collector to have similar watches in the 4, 5 and 6 digit variety. For example, just in Subs you could have 5513, 14060, 114060 and earliest references and then have similar set up with the date varieties (1680, 16800, 16610, 116610). There are always subtle changes in dial, movements, cases, bracelets, etc. Just depends how deep you want to go down the hole.

NBD, I have two explorer 1s and 2 explorer 2s. There are specific differences tho. And yes, both explorer 2s are in polar. Basically I have a pair of explorer 1 and 2 in tritium with its differences and one in superluminova.

Did someone mention repetition?
(Mike Woods' Collection or at least part of it.)

Congratulations on a great collection. Naturally as you add new pieces older watches may become redundant or lose their appeal. Others may really shine. I’ve been there.
Repetition is fine if they bring you joy. I have traveled all over this world for 20+ years. As such I am drawn to dual time or world time watches. To the average land dweller my collection probably appears repetitive. But I didn’t buy these things for anybody but myself.

I agree. I’ve been thinking of selling a few pieces lately and going to an all Rolex collection. I have my eye on the DaytonaC White and a new 40MM YG Day Date to compliment my 36MM! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think you will find that in this insanity there are people who call themselves collectors and those like myself who call them selves enthusiasts for lack of better words.
I've had up to 20 watches and now down to 9 but at no time was I collecting. I buy watches that I rotate and I wear constantly. But on the other hand there are people who collect. Some are hoarders and some are people who treat this is a hobby like stamp collecting or another type of collecting, but the goal is not necessarily to wear them, but actually to OWN them. So in this regard, owning various identical models makes perfect sense, but to myself as an a self called enthusiast it really makes no sense. Your descriptions, goals and choices may or may not fall into these categories I described AND your watch journey will probably evolve/change as time goes on. Enjoy. |
