Anyone vacationing in Mexico over the holidays? Leaving the Rolex at home?
So, I have a trip planned to Mayan Riviera over the xmas holidays, to stay at a 5 star resort.
I’ve travelled there before with a Rolex but this time my wife is adamant I don’t take any watches with me because she’s heard more headlines this year about Mexico in the news for the wrong reasons. I’ll oblige as it’s just a watch (was considering sub ND) though I’m sure I’ll run into many folks in the resorts wearing nice time pieces. Yes, she is a bit paranoid but her heart is in the right place. So the watches are going to the bank vault to give her peace of mind. Anyone else heading down south? Taking your Rolex? |

Yes.......heading there, In February.
In fact, many locations in Central and South America. Yes.......taking my Rolex, in fact 3 of them. My watches travel where I travel. If she is concerned, and you are concerned, leave them home. However, recognize that is not the safest place for them to be while your house is unoccupied.

Why not take it for wearing around the hotel. You could leave it in the safe when venturing further afield.

I would actually not store it at a bank vault either. Safety deposit boxes arent that safe actually and you wont have any leg to stand on. They aren't backed by Federal government.

She is stubborn but that was my thinking as well. She thinks wearing a watch is like any other jewelry, but I don’t see it like that at all. I’m pretty reserved and wear things in stealth mode most of the time. Just kinda feels naked not to have something on the wrist. Maybe my opportunity to get an Apple watch :) |

I've been traveling to Mexico (Cabo or Cancun/Playa del Carmen) the last 8-9 years and have worn my TTDJ every time. Been staying in all inclusive's so mostly travel from the airport to the resort and back. But, we go to town to shop and have a nice dinner at least once and have taken side trips. No issues at all. I usually have it on except to sleep, then lock it in the room safe.
Tourism drives the economies in these regions so the local people tend to be friendly to the tourists. I just made plans for Playa in March and will wear mine again and not worry about it. |

Your Rolex could come in handy to barter your way out of trouble in the unlikely event anything did happen. It’s a universally recognizable brand and practically currency. In Mexico it’s sensible to take precautions about where you go and when. But you should feel free to wear a Rolex on a vacation.

This is absolute rubbish only found on this forum. Stop being paranoid. In the past 18-24 months have traveled the world with my watches, often as many as 5 and all have survived. Yeah......even the DD40, go figure. Truly sad to read these threads and posts. Buy a Seiko. Sell the Rolex. Better yet, don’t leave the house. Why on Earth would you go there then?

I wear mine around northern Mexico pretty frequently. Mostly north western MX. San Luis R.C., Mexicali, Tijuana, Ensenada, and all the random places inbetween. It’s a bit like everything else, as long as you aren’t going around looking overly flashy or going to public places and saying “hey everyone, come look at my Rolex” you will be fine. I’ve been to very poor areas there as well, and generally no one really bats an eye.
Edit: I meant to add. I’m honestly more concerned leaving them at home. My area is very low on crime but I live right off the main road so it’s pretty easy for people to tell when we are not in. |

If it is on your mind and concerns you and/or your wife just leave it home and wear a beater. I personally wouldn't, and haven't taken my Rolex to Mexico. Why deal with it if you don't need to. Leave it home and set your mind at ease and enjoy your vacation.

The 'is it safe' questions seem to fall under the if someone SEES me wearing a Rolex, is it safe to peacock around? Not the got thrown in the trunk of a Taxi and I'm about to be an organ donor one. In the end, its situational awareness and if you have to ask, there's your answer. Life is cheap these days people. Very cheap. |

If you are going to a nice resort, why on earth would you leave your watch at home. You will be in good company.

She is concerned, I am not. But you know the saying... happy wife.. When traveling without the family I wear whatever I want without too much concern. Some context, she grew up in Brazil and her family has had some bad experiences when she was younger. |

I wouldn't. I'd take a more appropriate watch for that locale... A GShock. Why be a potential target?

Just took my LVc to Tulum. Rode bikes, nights out on the town, bars, restaurants, etc. no issues.
Also, went for a dip at a local cenote and met a guy with a CHNR TT diving off rocks and snorkeling. He didn’t see too concerned either. :) |

The quality, top notch resorts in Mexico are all safe. Was just at a 5 star in Playa Del Carmen a few months ago. Took my Pepsi, Cartier and Batman. All were safe and made it back OK. Most wont even notice your watch. Just don’t flash it when traveling outside the resort, and more importantly, avoid traveling outside the resort if possible. Safety first. Awareness. Insure them.

I’ve never gone anywhere without my watches. If I’m too worried to take my watch it doesn’t sound like a place I’d feel safe traveling to.

Good answer. And for all the naysayers, just read the news.

That's what a Seiko Gmt/Diver is for if you don't feel comfortable.

I’d take it. That doesn’t mean you need to wear it 24/7. Traveling to the resort, excursions, time at beach / pool, etc. no need for a Rolex. But dinner attire and nightly festivities on the resort I’d 100% want my watch on the wrist. You will see your fair share of nice watches and wish yours was with you (maybe not.. I would at least). Will she be leaving her wedding / engagement ring at home? |

Buy a Squale for trips to places where there is a possibility of something happening. I personally won’t ever travel to Mexico but if I did any Rolex would stay home and if they wanted this you’re only out $560.00.

Leave it at home. Weather down there necessitates short sleeves mostly and most of the fun in that area is had off the resort. Wear a g shock. It's common sense.

Yeah I’ve already experienced this before traveling with her - spotting all kinds of nice watches while I am naked on the wrist. Like deja vu, but hard to argue with her. Definitely. She won’t be wearing her ring. |

Say it isn’t so. I am like you. Enjoy it. Not ragging on OP as much as some of the other posts but what the heck has this world come to? Buy an expensive watch and then be afraid to wear it to places you have no concern about exposing your personal body to but are concerned about a watch. Be afraid to scratch it. Be afraid to put a finger print on it. Be so pompous to think that people around you actually know you have a Rolex and care? Unreal. I can see how some just cannot understand the lunacy of where this has all gotten to. I’ll make sure to mark this thread and post the photos of my Rolex enjoying the area.

If a Rolex were just a watch, OP wouldn't ask the question. And if 'take your family' means dressing them like a Tourneau Christmas tree, then yes. That's a possible risk too. Situational awareness and good judgement always applies. Or is there some pop culture reason for Swiss and Canadian flags being stitched on so many travel bags and personal item insurance going through the roof when you add a monetary value to your timepiece? |
