Need TRF recommendations... San Juan, PR in January.

Our last excursion to Chicago, I posted here and got some fantastic recommendations both on/off the beaten path.

In January, the wife and I will spend 6 days in San Juan, PR.

Looking for recommendations on adventures, site seeing, and of course food!

She will be in continuing education from 7-12 each day, and I will spend my morning chasing tarpon on the fly rod in the mangroves.

otherwise, open to everything.

please advice.

Rincon for mafongo. Old san juan has a really nice cigar bar down one of the cobble stone streets. Visit the fort. And stay away from the area with the colored buildings by the coast in old san juan. A must eat... are the food trucks outside the us military base in old san juan, it was called triple meat in spanish.

We took a cab from out hotel to Old San Juan. Lots to see/do down there.

We did a ton of walking between all of the different fort buildings that are part of the national park service.

Had coffee at a great little coffee bar down there. I may have a picture of the place so you can google it.

The brightly colored buildings are he referenced are, if I remember correctly, the more “unsavory” part of town.

Always be aware of your surroundings in San Juan. I won’t say that it is not safe, but it is like any other big city and has a high level of poverty. We were there right after Hurricane Maria so people were very excited to see tourists, but I hear some of the rifraf has returned.

If you do make it to the west side of the island for Rincon Beach, stop by Mahi Mahi off the 402 in Anasco for lunch or dinner on the way back. The make some of the best mojitios on the island.
Also check out the rainforest (El Yunque). There are some trails you can hike through and pass some waterfalls/streams. Of course you should stop by El Morro fort in old SJ.
If you are renting a car and driving to Rincon, you can stop by Arecibo. It's home to the largest single dish telescope.

Have fun.

Do you play golf? El Conquistador on East side or Dorado. There is a nice casino in Dorado as well on the north side.

We took the Bacardi rum tour at the plantain which was interesting and gives you an opportunity at the end to sample some special rums as well as purchase special editions only available there.

Go scuba or snorkeling? Lots of places to go out in a group and do that.

Old town has been suggested and a great place to walk around. Would also go to the two big forts. Very cool history and interesting.

I've been diving on the east side on the Farjado side as well as Aguadilla (West side) and Desecheo Island. IMHO the diving is not worth it. There was not a lot of life to see. It seemed overfished IMO. You can always try Bioluminescent Bay.
