Acronym + Photo Thread

To help out a new guy, can you folks post up a picture with its matching acronym/nickname. Need to learn this slang. I keep bouncing back to the sticky but I'm hoping the addition of a photo will make things a little more clear for me...?

Go....

No, it doesn't......They don't refer to there products as Bluesys or Pepsis, etc.

ac·ro·nym
/ˈakrəˌnim/

an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g. ASCII, NASA ).

How is “Bluesy” or “Pepsi” an acronym? I think you’re asking for a list of nicknames.

So first off, your question might be a little confusing cause a nickname (especially the ones you referenced) have nothing to do with acronyms.

Second, (I personally don’t care) but nicknames around here are a bit frowned upon. I am completely indifferent to them, and actually feel it’s sillier to get worked up over nicknames than it is to make nicknames, but none the less, you might see some resistance to the idea of a sticky that celebrates and accepts them.

On a side note: if you search “Batman” on the Rolex website, it will link you to the 126710BLNR.

My mistake.....I used the word from the sticky above. I'm really hoping for pictures next to these "NICKNAMES" ....thanks for helping me! I should have posted on the sticky I'm thinking now....I edited the original post added "nickname". (But there are several acronyms new to me that are used here as well.)

There are a few who seriously dislike the use of nicknames even though they are quite prevalent throughout this site, facebook, instagram, etc. I think they are too set in their ways.

That said, I have no problem with the use of nicknames, which you did ask for.

I guess it's my ignorance as to this hobby....I see these abbreviations on practically every other thread, and it's a bit confusing as a beginner....perhaps I'll hush up and learn before asking.

Thanks my friend!

Nicknames and other references aren't universal. Bluesy, for example, was started by a long-standing member to refer to his watch back when the TT Blue Sub was popular.

That particular watch has fallen off the radar lately, so many other blue dial watches are referred to as a Bluesy too.

Pretty unlikely that somebody will stick a picture in an extensive list. That would make something simple many, many pages long.

That would be just as annoying as the guys who have to "quote" a post with pictures over and over...…

Perhaps you could go through and make a list of nicknames vs. model numbers then add photos and produce your own mega post as a learning curve experience ?

That might have some value if you leave the stinking nicknames off it.

Pepsi, called that way because the bezel is red and blue like the Pepsi logo:

Coke, called that way because the bezel is black and red:

Hulk, called that way because the dial and bezel are green:

Kermit, called that way because the bezel is green and the dial is black:

That ^^^ is the idea.

But there are a lot of things to learn.

Like “flat four”

“Stick dial”

“Fat lady”

“Buckley dial”

Then there are acronyms, like PCL, which stands for Polished Center Links...

Meaning, the links in the middle of the bracelet are polished instead of brushed like the rest is the bracelet.

Here is a pic to illustrate:

See how the middle of the bracelet has polished links and the edge of the bracelet is brushed?

That means that bracelet has PCLs

But anyway, there is a lot to learn.

And it’s kinda fun learning things as you go. It’s part of any hobby.

Anyway, enjoy!

Not a bad idea, but also not a big deal IMO. 95% of the long standing members here (and on every forum) start out with repetitive inquiries, silly threads, asking questions with seemingly obvious answers, etc. it’s a process almost everyone of us has been through.

Welcome to the forum! Don’t be discouraged. Your intention is a totally reasonable IMo, with a mistake in your verbiage. That said, again, a lot of people get their panties in a bunch when it comes to nicknames, so you’ll meet some resistance.

I’d add to the naysayers though, it is pretty annoying having a whole conversation with someone when they’re referencing the hulk, only to find out after a lot of confusion they actually were talking about the Kermit.

Whether you like the nicknames or not, it’s the world we live in. Almost every SA I’ve dealt with calls the watches by their nicknames, most don’t even know the reference numbers. Crazy? Yes, but still it is what it is.

I think he just means it’s been discussed before.

Thank you gentlemen, but

Let's see if I have this correct…..

There are two guys, both Explorers, Explorer One is A Big Huge Hulk of a guy, that perpetually Dwells at the Skies in hopes of finding some King of the Air, through all the meteorites. While all along this second explorer Kermit, a Pepsi drinker, is in search, on the oceans aboard his Yacht, Mastering the seas for silver and golden pearls, using his Submarine. They have a mutual friend the President of some big Vintage Coke company, that has been trying to set them up but can’t find just the right date?

That about adds it up?

Mr. School boy, Mr. Tools, Burlington, Chadridy, and Patton, Thank you sincerely!

You forgot about a mad scientist named Mille Gauss that loved working in nuclear facilities and conducting experiments in extreme electromagnetic environments.
